Google Manipulates Search Results; FTC Convinced

Bangalore: Google, the world?s most popular search engine may soon step into troubles as most of the commissioners at the Federal Trade Commission have been convinced after a year long investigation that Google is manipulating its search results to harm its rivals.

According to three FTC commissioners who declined to reveal the name to Reuters, Google will soon be headed into tough negotiations and the exact outline of procedures will come in early November or late December.

The investigation into the search giant?s activities was triggered by the complaints from a long list of companies to FTC, alleging Google of using its dominance in search to lower the ranks of rivals in search results, thereby steering the customers to Google products that provide similar services. The consumers are usually driven to the top search results and the complainers argued FTC to crack down on Google.

However, Google has denied about the alleged manipulations from their part and had commented about the discussions with FTC that, "We are happy to answer any questions that regulators have about our business."

The complaints have mainly come from Google rivals who specialize in travel, shopping and entertainment.??????? Even though companies rarely talk about their dealings with FTC, Nextag, the comparison shopping website and Yelp, the consumer review website have openly complained about the world?s number one search engine in the hearings. During one of such congressional hearings in last year, Eric Schmidt, Google executive chairman said, ?May I simply say that I can assure you we've not cooked anything."

Adding to these complaints, FTC is also considering the complaints about Google refusing to share data, which allow developers and advertisers to create software to compare the value they get on Google advertising compared to spending on other search engines like Microsoft's Bing or Yahoo. According to a previous statement from FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, he expects a decision in the case by the end of the year.

If proved guilty, FTC and Google could sit down for settlements and if the negotiations fail, it could lead to a next long courtroom fight. FTC has already hired a leading lawyer to head the probe which strengthens the possibility of a huge crackdown on the world?s number one search engine.

Weightloss Success : HungerShield Unearths How Christine Lost ...

HungerShield cofounder and food consultant Elizabeth DeRobertis, MS, RD, CDE gets just as much inspiration from her patients as they get from her. In her practice of 14 years, she has worked with countless individuals who have changed their lives, their vitality and how they feel about themselves. One of her proudest achievements is supporting Christine Naughton as she lost 155 pounds! ?Christine is an attractive person,? says DeRobertis. ?She has been one of the most dedicated folk I have worked with in my years in practice, and she has transformed her life, and has been an inspiration to all those around her.?. How did she do it? ?I lost my weight with willpower, determination, and the guidance of my mentor and dietician Elizabeth DeRobertis,? announces Naughton, 4* ?She saved me from dying.

Christine: before and after Once I made the commitment, I followed without wavering.?. Christine?s dedication to change her life came from both external and internal incentive. ?I had an internal displeasure that was so deep, along with a absence of self-esteem and self-love,? says Naughton.

?I could not shop at any clothes shop I wanted, and I picked up on looks and comments from others.?. Christine started on her very own and was able to keep off her first 60 pounds for a year and a half. Her sister then shared a flyer for a 10-week weight loss program with DeRobertis and she joined. The programme stressed responsibility (showing up), food journaling, exercising, and also offered a gift card incentive to the ?Biggest Loser,? which Christine was content to win! She credits her hard work, along with the support of DeRobertis, and the abundant tools and methods she was given along the way. Christine?s Tips for Weight Control Success :. * Be prepared.

?Always have a good break with you, so you do not eat something you?ll regret,? announces Naughton. ?Mine is a red Succulent Apple!? Christine strains that she plans ahead by writing her meals and snacks out the night before each day. * Have a tactic for all situations. ?If you're going to a wedding event or party and you are not sure what?s on the menu, eat something that can fill you up a little, such as a low calorie Greek yogurt, so you don't overeat,? says Naughton. ?When you get there, scan the room for the lowest calorie foods and fill your plate with those.? In the majority of situations, doubling up on vegetables and fruit before adding your protein or carbohydrates is an excellent approach. * Watch what you drink!. Christine focused on drinking more water and removing calories from other beverages.

She also uses HungerShield to support her goals and control appetite. ?I drink it between 3-5pm so I will stay satisfied for dinner and avoid additional nibbles at that time,? claims Naughton. ?It also hydrates me with a boost of energy before a workout.? Christine enjoys HungerShield added to at least 16 oz of water, with a squirt of lemon and a packet of Splenda. * Build liability and awareness.

?Food journaling keeps me accountable,? claims Naughton. ?It takes one minute of your day, it is worth your life ? so find the time! I utilise a easy composition notebook I call my bible!? Journaling feelings also helped Christine. She always kept track of how her day went and how she was feeling. * Use your internal GPS system. ?I learned to get back on track right away if I ate something I didn't plan,? announces Naughton. DeRobertis stresses the significance of a ?GPS ? approach with her patients. ?When you make a wrong turn in your car, the GPS does not say, ?you messed up, now drive off a cliff.

? Instead, it recalculates your route and gets you back on track immediately,? says DeRobertis. Net result, Christine emphasises to all fascinated by following in her footsteps, ?it takes consistency, commitment, focus and a great supporting system. HungerShield is the sole product currently on the market that has natural ingredients, has top quality sources of fiber and protein as well as probiotics that promote digestive health.

It's also the only product in this group that was brought into being by healthcare executives and can work with any weight reduction regimen on the market. For more in-depth info, visit hungershield You can follow HungerShield on Twitter HungerShield and on Facebook.

Chicagoboyz Outdoor Recreation Update

Posted by Jonathan on October 13th, 2012 (All posts by Jonathan)

Following the great kayaking challenge of 2012, my friends invited me to join them on a paddling day-trip in Manatee Bay, not far from Key Largo.

nice shoes!

This time I brought a map, compass, large supply of food and drink, sunscreen, bug spray, extra clothes, toilet paper, etc. Also a more comfortable kayak.

Here is the route. We started at South Dade Marina (a great place to leave your car for a day?s paddling), went SE down the Glades/Aerojet canal, and then followed the dotted lines NE through the shallow lakes and then down to the beach at Short Key.

We hung out at the beach for a few hours and then headed straight back across Manatee Bay with a tailwind. The day?s trip was about 7 miles and one of our group recorded most of it on his GPS.

It was a fun day. Aside from a period on the beach when I ate too much and had to lie down for a while, there was much less adventure on this trip as compared to the last one. This could be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

UN resolution seeks recovery of Mali's north

(AP) ? The U.N. Security Council on Friday unanimously approved a plan to back an African-led military force to help the Malian army oust Islamic militants who seized the northern half of the country and are turning it into an al-Qaida terrorist hub.

The French-sponsored resolution expresses alarm over the infiltration by "al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), affiliated groups and other extremist groups," and condemns "the abuses of human rights committed in the north of Mali by armed rebels, terrorist and other extremist groups."

The U.N.'s assistant secretary-general for human rights returned from Mali to tell reporters this week that al-Qaida-affiliated Islamic militias have imposed a harsh version of Shariah law on the north.

"The population is suffering," Ivan Simonovic said.

He received testimony that forced marriage, forced prostitution, and rape are widespread, and that women are being sold as "wives" for less than $1,000 in northern Mali.

Separately, "it is frightening to hear that lists are being compiled of women who are either pregnant or have children and are not married. We don't know what will happen to them," Simonovic said.

Al-Qaida had abolished taxes in the north and were using extortion, ransom payments and funds from drug transshipping to establish their rule, he said.

Children are being recruited to build bombs and to serve as soldiers, with payments made to their families of $600 on enlistment and $400 a month afterward, in a territory in which half the population live son less than $1.25 a day, Simonovic said.

Executions of captured soldiers and cases of rape had become "more systemic," he said.

More than 1.5 million Malians have had to flee their homes, with some 40,000 displaced people in the regional city of Mopti. Over 100,000 refugees have registered in Mauritania, over 100,000 in Burkina Faso, 40,000 in Niger and 30,000 in Algeria.

The resolution adopted Friday gives Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon 45 days to help Mali, the West Africans and the African Union develop plans to recover the occupied territory. It invokes Chapter Seven of the U.N. Charter, which opens the door to military intervention and enforcement of the council's decisions. It also calls for help from the European Union to help train and assist the Malian army to retake the north.

Another resolution authorizing deployment and backing of the African peacekeeping force would have to come later, after Ban sends specific recommendations to the Security Council.

The main thrust of the plan is likely to be hammered out at an Oct. 19 meeting in Bamako, Mali, of representatives of the United Nations, ECOWAS, the AU, the European Union and neighboring countries.

The Economic Community of West African States and Mali's transitional government asked the Security Council in September to authorize a military intervention to oust the al-Qaida linked Islamists. But the council said it wanted the West African group to prepare a "feasible" plan with "detailed options" for a force, and to coordinate with other African nations and the European Union.

French President Francois Hollande said Thursday that any military intervention must be carried out only by Africans. He emphasized France's willingness to provide material and training, but said "There will be no (French) troops on the ground."

Mali's democratically elected leader was ousted in a military coup in March. The junta accused him of failing to quell a rebellion in the north, which began in January. After the coup, Tuareg rebels took advantage of the power vacuum and within weeks took control of the north, aided by an Islamist faction. But the Islamists quickly ousted the Tuaregs and took control of half the country.

Friday's resolution urges the transitional authorities and Malian secular rebel groups such as the Tauregs to cut off their ties to al-Qaida and negotiate as soon as possible "in order to seek a sustainable political solution" to the crisis.

Experienced Meeting Goer Provides Candid Presentation Tips To ...

Posted on by Joslyn O.

Today?s guest blog post is by AAA member, Kirsten Bell. Bell provides a candid approach towards her experience presenting a paper at an anthropology conference.

How to deliver a paper at an anthropology conference

By Kirsten Bell

Academic conferences, as several observers have noted, are a singularly understudied phenomenon.? One of the more profound insights on this topic is to be found in an article by Jacobs and McFarlane published in, of all places, the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning.? They note that conferences are sites where inexperienced neophytes learn how to become professionals ? how to (quite literally) walk the walk and talk the talk.?? While we learn from the practices and attributes of our individual teachers, it is only at our discipline?s most cherished events that we get to see The Anthropologist as a larger species of academic in all of his or her glory.? Thus, more than any other academic pursuit, be it fieldwork, writing or teaching, it?s at conferences that we learn how to inhabit an anthropological habitus.

At some level, we?re all aware of this.? Certainly, for those budding anthropologists who have never previously presented at an academic conference, they can be a nerve-wracking affair.?? If not careful, one can become the academic equivalent of a gauche guest at a dinner party, or the Nigel-No-Friends on the playground ignored by other students and picked last for team sports.

I learnt this lesson the hard way at the Australian Anthropological Society conference in 1997, where I presented my first paper.?? Having never previously attended a conference, much less presented at one, I turned to my older sister, a geologist, for advice.? Amongst her several pearls of wisdom were the instructions to ?use PowerPoint. Everyone?s doing it?.[1]? She then gave me her own personalized template (blue background with yellow writing, fashionable amongst scientists in the mid 1990s and heartily despised by the time it finally went out of fashion a decade later) and I diligently made up my slides, paid to get them transferred onto actual slides[2] and took the slide box with me to the conference.

The conference paper was an abysmal failure.? While my unfortunate mispronunciation of the word ?cacophany?[3] didn?t help matters, I blame the PowerPoint slides for the paper?s poor reception.? Afterwards, the academic who chaired the session politely informed me that while the use of PowerPoint might be de rigueur in scientific circles, it wasn?t at all the thing amongst anthropologists, as our complex and abstract ideas didn?t lend themselves well to bullet points on a slide.? Clearly, my fatal error was asking a geologist for advice on how to communicate at an anthropology conference, which, as it turned out, was rather like asking an ice hockey player what strategies suit competitive netball.

In light of the upcoming AAA Meeting in San Francisco, and in the spirit of offering collegial advice to a new generation of anthropologists forced to navigate the shark-infested waters that constitute the typical academic conference, I?ve compiled a list of how to present papers at anthropology conferences.? However, before I outline these tips there?s one fundamental piece of advice I need to impart.? You must disabuse yourself of any na?ve notion that conferences are about disseminating knowledge and sharing intellectual ideas.? It?s precisely these sorts of pie-in-the-sky fantasies that will get you into trouble. ?As Erving Goffman pointed out in Forms of Talk, if one?s goal is merely to transmit information, an academic talk is an extraordinarily ineffective way to do it. ?We don?t attend talks to actually learn something new but to imbibe the essence of the speaker?s identity. To quote Goffman, ?To the degree that the speaker is a significant figure in some relevant world or other, to that degree this access has a ritual character, in the? sense of affording supplicants preferential contact with an entity held to be of value? (p. 187).

This ritual character extends to the structure of academic talks themselves.? In an article on graduate student seminars, Bob Weissberg observes that such presentations are a speech event with a distinct rhetorical structure.? The same is true of a typical anthropology talk. Below I outline four key elements of a successful presentation at an anthropology conference.? Some of these elements I have used myself with a reliable degree of frequency over the years; others I have gleaned through watching (and marveling at) other anthropologists present at conferences.

1) Start with a fieldwork vignette.

This component is so obvious, so self-evident, it?s hardly worth stating, echoing as it does the standard conventions for writing an anthropology paper identified in Writing Culture.? However, I?ll say it anyway in case some of you are so green as to somehow have missed its prime importance.? You must start your paper with a vignette from your fieldwork.? It doesn?t need to relate to the focus of your paper or even make sense.? The introductory anecdote is there to serve one purpose and one purpose only and that is to authorize you, to say to the audience: ?see, I?ve done fieldwork?, which, as Nigel Barley has so eloquently observed in The Innocent Anthropologist, is your main form of anthropological street cred.[4]? Sure, it gives you endless fodder for lectures (especially the ones you?ve forgotten to prepare) and makes you an interesting guest to have at dinner parties, but one of its less recognized advantages is its ability to allow you to skip boring literary and rhetorical conventions such as actually bothering introducing your topic.

2) Name drop trendy theorists ? preferably impenetrable continental ones.

Based on the number of times I heard his name mentioned at the 2010 Australian Anthropology Society conference and the 2011 AAA conference, I?d suggest Georgio Agamben as a potential candidate.? To those of you who happen to think that Bare Life is the name of a National Geographic documentary, or who ? even worse ? don?t think the concept of homo sacer is relevant to your work, I say this.? The point of impenetrable theorists is that their concepts can be applied to anything ? their very opacity allows them to absorb whatever phenomenon you are interested in, kind of like an intellectual equivalent of a black hole that sucks up matter and then spits it back out in the form of a shiny new star.

3) Sprinkle your paper liberally with non-English words and phrases.? This is easiest done if you work in a locale where English is not the lingua franca.? But don?t ? and this is critical ? actually translate what you are saying.? Neophytes tend to worry that such tactics might be confusing, and unnecessarily alienate audience members who don?t speak the language.? These are spurious concerns based on the mistaken assumption that your presentation is designed to do anything as mundane as actually convey useful information.? Let me reiterate that your presentation is about establishing your credentials as an anthropologist.? Throwing in words and phrases in the local language without explaining them serves this function by demonstrating that you are so fluent, engaged and immersed, etcetera, etcetera, you?re not even aware when you have slipped into the local language.? In Barthian terms these words and phrases also stand in syntagmic relation (note use of strategy 2 here) to the fieldwork vignette that you will use to start your presentation.

Obviously, if you work in an exclusively English-speaking context you?re at a disadvantage here (but, of course, unless you were raised intellectually in one of those new-fangled cultural studies-type departments, you knew that already).? The only way to successfully counteract this handicap is to bump up your use of strategy 2.? Also, if you know any Latin, French or German phrases you can throw in, use them promiscuously throughout your presentation.

4) It?s important to prepare your presentation as you would any other paper ? i.e., as something to be read rather than spoken.?? I know this is the opposite of the advice any communication specialist will give you but, remember, the purpose of your paper is not to convey information but to credibly perform your identity as an anthropologist.? So what if you have to flip through a couple of pages half way through your talk when you realize that you?re running out of time and still have 5 pages to go?? This merely reinforces your cultivated disheveledness (see discussion of dress below).? Who cares if you write in paragraph-long sentences that are incomprehensible to all but the most devoted listeners?? Ultimately, the less the audience understands, the better.? That way, you will have fewer thorny questions to deal with, and you can accuse any detractors of completely misunderstanding your paper.?? Moreover, you can immediately submit it to a journal without having to rework it, thus killing multiple birds with one stone.

Finally, although not relating to the content or structure of the anthropology paper per se, I?d like to give one final word of advice on presenting a successful paper, which relates to the need to dress appropriately.? While you may think that anthropologists are above such banalities, dress is a central means through which an anthropologist communicates his or her professional identity.?? If you don?t want to take my word for it, then re-read Natural Symbols, where Mary Douglas points to the contrast between academics and stock brokers, noting the carefully modulated shagginess of the former (which, I would suggest, reaches its epitome in the sartorial stylings of anthropologists).? Therefore, you must assiduously cultivate this disheveledness, even if you heart secretly desires the perky preppiness of a Tommy Hilfiger polo shirt or the understated refinement of a Brooks Brothers suit.

The following should be avoided at all costs: suits (unless worn ironically)[5] and ostentatious bling (unless vaguely ?ethnic? or ?ghetto? in design).?? It?s worth noting that clothing also has a valuable symbolic function to perform in advertising your fieldsite, so try incorporating some subtle references in your mode of dress: for example, some sort of beaded accessory if you specialize in Native American studies, a brightly printed headscarf if you work in Africa, an intricately embroidered bag if you work in Southeast Asia, etcetera.

If you don?t work in a fieldsite that promotes the use of such items, I?d advise you to develop a preference for generic ethnic/arty clothing shops.? For example, during my PhD, on days when I was tutoring I would gravitate towards a shirt with an Indonesian-style batik pattern that I bought from an op shop for $5.? In fact, it got to the point where my sister would snigger whenever she saw me wearing it and say ?you must be tutoring today?.? Did I do fieldwork in Indonesia?? No.? But South Koreans tend to dress fairly conservatively and wearing my bright pink hanbok (note use of strategy 3 here) to teach in seemed a little excessive.

Actually, this is an important point: there?s a line between dressing like an anthropologist and crossing all sorts of other potentially unsavory boundaries.? Lean too far towards the arty side (especially if your taste runs towards clean, simple lines) and you run the risk of being seen as a sociologist.? Too disheveled and you risk being mistaken for a homeless person (please refer to the ?Prof or hobo?? quiz for valuable lessons on how to avoid crossing this line http://individual.utoronto.ca/somody/quiz.html).? Also, beware of going ?full ethnic?.?? No anthropologist wants to be accused of cultural appropriation or grotesque mimicry.

While I think you?ll find these strategies of great benefit when presenting papers at anthropology conferences, tread with caution before attempting to import them into your performance repertoire at other types of conferences.? If, for example, you regularly attend health or medical conferences, you may find your cherished symbols subject to an unexpected resignification.? Trust me on this, anthropological forms of cultural capital do not translate well into other settings.[6]

Acknowledgements: This piece was informed by conversations with fellow anthropologists too numerous to name here (and who?d probably prefer that I don?t make the attempt).? However, I?m particularly indebted to Eric Mykhalovskiy ? not actually an anthropologist at all, but a sociologist who shared some invaluable insights about the differences between anthropology and sociology conferences and who introduced me to the ?Prof or Hobo? quiz.?? Needless to say, Eric and the unnamed anthropologists bear no responsibility for the final content of this paper.

Biography: Kirsten Bell completed a PhD in social anthropology in Australia at James Cook University (2000).? She is currently a Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia and has also held faculty appointments in anthropology departments at Macquarie University in Australia and the University of Northern Colorado in the USA.? Her current research interests are located in the anthropology of biomedicine and public health.

[1] I can conclusively say that NO ONE at that time was using it in anthropology.? I may very well bear the dubious honor of being the first anthropologist ever to use it at an academic conference.

[2] Readers born after 1985 probably don?t have a clue what I?m talking about.

[3] Not CACK-oh-fanny, it turns out, but the rather more counter-intuitive ca-COFF-any.

[4] Of course, as Barley was well aware, your street cred varies substantially depending on where you did your fieldwork.

[5] I?m not entirely certain what an ironically worn suit looks like, but if you have to ask it?s probably best not to make the attempt.

[6] For example, while a messy office is part of the cultivated disheveledness of any anthropologist worth his or her salt and demonstrates a busy and creative mind at work, in medical settings you will invariably be labeled disorganized, erratic and, yes, incompetent.

New Salto Hotel & Casino Adds To Uruguay Gaming Sector

Salto Hotel y Casino

The new Salto Hotel & Casino is a $20 million, 4-star hotel in the capital city of Salto, Uruguay.

From Montevideo to Rivera to Atl?ntida, 2012 has been the Year of the Casino in Uruguay considering the number of new projects announced, under construction or opening their doors.?Now add Salto to the list of Uruguay cities cutting the ribbon on a new casino.

Opening next Friday, the Salto Hotel & Casino is a 6-story, 57-room hotel in the heart of the capital city. El Pa?s says the Salto will feature modern guest rooms with WiFi and flat-screen TVs, a Vegas-style casino, restaurant, pool, gym and meeting facilities.

The investor group behind the new $20 million hotel is the same group of Argentines and Uruguayans who opened the Rivera Casino & Resort on the northern border with Brazil. While the Rivera caters more to casino-loving Brazilians, the Salto will market aggressively to gaming-minded Argentines across the border from Salto.

The investor group acquired the hotel from the Banco de Seguros del Estado last year. The 65-year old building was originally scheduled to open in May, but extensive renovations raising the hotel to 4-star status delayed the opening to this month. The new Sofitel Hotel Casino Carrasco is experiencing similar delays, although that opening is planned for November. (Full Story in Spanish)

Things You Should Do Before Entering A New Relationship ...

Before the autumn leaves even hit the ground you can rest assure that the chilled weather and sounds of the whipping wind won?t be the only thing reminding you of what season it is. You can also count on overhearing chatter, possibly participating in a few conversations of your own, reading Facebook statuses, and coming across tweets that remind you that as soon as the temperature drops it is officially ?cuffing season.? For those who are unfamiliar, cuffing season is a period during the colder months in which some singles tend to desire to hook up with another person to settle down with them for the fall and winter months. These relationships usually end once the weather warms up and ?choosing season? begins. I don?t really buy into the ?cuffing season? philosophy because I don?t really feel that it is smart to rush into a relationship just because of a season (or loneliness). Rushed autumn relationships seem to frequently end in painful or even indifferent spring heartbreaks. So, before you go hopping into a relationship, check out some of the things that you should do for yourself before entering into a new relationship.

Transition project produces positive outcomes for autistic Maine ...

A collaborative study from the universities of New Hampshire and Maine has found that youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) benefited significantly from a family-centered transition services model, with 90 percent of participants finding employment after high school.

In a randomized experimental trial, researchers found that, during the first year, youths with ASD who received services through the Family-Centered Transition Project had significantly higher student expectations for the future, parent expectations for the future, self-determination, and vocational decision-making ability than a control group.

?FCTP?s process has been proven effective and results in good transition outcomes,? said David Hagner, project director with the UNH Institute on Disability. ?About 90 percent of the students who participated in our first project have obtained employment since graduating from high school.?

Results of the study were published in the journal Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities and have been presented at seven national conferences since the project?s conclusion in August 2011.

The project?s first phase served 47 New Hampshire and Maine ASD students ages 16-18 and their families. The study was funded by a two-year, $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Research Program to the IOD and the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies at the University of Maine.

An additional three-year, $600,000 grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, will allow more students with ASD from New Hampshire and Maine to benefit from transition services found effective during the first round of project activities.

In the second phase of the project, the Autism Society of Maine and the Strafford Learning Center in Somersworth, N.H., are working with schools, developmental service agencies, and vocational rehabilitation agencies to redirect and blend existing transition service funding to support FCTP?s process so more students and families can experience positive outcomes.

?We use grant funds to fill in gaps while we work on developing and marketing the service, with the expectation that it will be sustainable after the three-year project is over,? said Hagner.

Obese Teen Boys Have Up To 50 Percent Less Testosterone Than ...

From UB News Center?..

A study by the University at Buffalo shows for the first time that obese males ages 14 to 20 have up to 50 percent less total testosterone than do normal males of the same age, significantly increasing their potential to be impotent and infertile as adults.

The paper was published online as an accepted article in Clinical Endocrinology.

The authors are the same researchers in the University at Buffalo?s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences who first reported in 2004 the presence of low testosterone levels, known as hypogonadism, in obese, type 2 diabetic adult males and confirmed it in 2010 in more than 2,000 obese men, both diabetic and nondiabetic.

?We were surprised to observe a 50 percent reduction in testosterone in this pediatric study because these obese males were young and were not diabetic,? says Paresh Dandona, MD, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine, chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in the UB medical school and first author on the study. ?The implications of our findings are, frankly, horrendous because these boys are potentially impotent and infertile,? says Dandona. ?The message is a grim one with massive epidemiological implications.?

The small study included 25 obese and 25 lean males and was controlled for age and level of sexual maturity. Concentrations of total and free testosterone and estradiol, an estrogen hormone, were measured in morning fasting blood samples. The results need to be confirmed with a larger number of subjects, Dandona says.

Expiration Dates, Explained | Greatist

Here?s some food for thought: Expiration dates refer to quality and freshness of food, not safety. (Yep, that?s a shocker!) So even if a food item passes its expiration date, that item could technically still be safe to eat. We dug a little deeper to find out what different types of ?expiration? dates really indicate, and if they can be useful for consumers.

Milk Bottle

Lawless Labels ? The Need-to-Know

Expiration dates on food and drink products are not required or regulated by Federal administrators (with the exception of infant formula). Those mysterious dates printed on food containers telling us when to purchase, eat, or throw out that tub of yogurt by are actually decided by each individual manufacturer. To complicate things even more, the printed numbers can mean multiple things, and there?s no continuity between types of products. So we?ve spelled it out for you with help from the USDA:

  • ??Sell-By.? This number is for the store, letting employers know how long a certain product can stay on the shelf. You should buy the food item before this date passes to ensure it?s fresh.
  • ?Best if Used Before/By.? This date helps specify when a product is at its peak freshness. It does not indicate the safety of the item. Buy and use before this date for best quality.
  • ?Use-By.??These dates indicate when a product will start deteriorating in quality and flavor. (Again, it?s not a safety guide!) Again, it?s best to buy and use products before this date for best quality, but consuming the product a few days late won?t kill ya.
  • Closed or coded dates.?These are packing codes that track the product when it is being shipped. These codes are typically a series of numbers and letters that indicate dates and times the container was filled, and places of manufacture. (They look something like this: 045B97 April 11, 2008.) They should not be interpreted as ?use-by? dates.

Unfortunately, there?s no predetermined number of days that determine how long certain foods stay edible. However, the USDA recommends following the ?Use-By? date on food packages just to stay on the safe side. If there?s no date to follow, here are a few key recommended storage timelines:

The Shelf Life of Your Food

Food Rules ? Your Action Plan

We can?t just go by the numbers and forgo properly storing food. (That carton of milk will go bad overnight on the kitchen counter regardless of its expiration date!) Food spoilage depends just as much on storing conditions as it does time on the shelf[]. So take into account these tips to help keep food fresh and safe.

  • Set it right. Make sure the fridge is set at or below 40 and the freezer is set at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If your cooling dial doesn?t have exact temperatures noted, place a?thermometer?in the center of the refrigerator overnight for an accurate reading.
  • Unpack promptly. After you get back from the grocery store, refrigerate or freeze perishables or pre-cooked foods within two hours to avoid spoiling.
  • Eat it or freeze it. Food safety experts suggest consumers eat or freeze meat within two days of purchasing. The reason? Raw meat is typically kept around 30 degrees Fahrenheit in the store, while refrigerators at home are typically set around 40 degrees (so veggies wont freeze)!
  • Don?t let it linger. Don?t eat sliced produce, meat, poultry, and eggs if they?ve been left out for more than two hours. The same goes for milk ? while it may last for five days past its sell-by date in the fridge, it will quickly spoil if it?s not kept cold.
  • Trust your judgment. Make sure to use expiration dates as a guide rather than relying solely on the numbers. It?s ultimately up to us to figure out when food is no longer fresh and edible. (Yep, that means giving those week-old cold cuts a good whiff.

Do you usually go by the dates, or stick to intuition? ?Let us know in the comments below, or tweet the author?@lschwech.

Galaxy Note 2 for T-Mobile - Know Your Cell

We know that the Galaxy Note 2?is on all the major carriers so it will be interesting to see how these companies market it differently. After spending some time with the T-Mobile version, we think it will be pitched as a gaming machine.?

At the MobileCon show, we played with the Galaxy Note 2 and a gaming Bluetooth controller accessory. The Galaxy Note 2 fit neatly into a stand and you could then play games like Need for Speed, with physical controllers and buttons. It was smooth, responsive and a pretty good experience if you don't mind carrying around a bulky accessory.?

The Galaxy Note 2?for T-Mobile will be quite an impressive device, as even though it has a 5.5-inch display, it's still quite slim and manageable. The device will also be jam-packed with power including a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, Wi-Fi, 2GB of RAM, NFC, GPS and microSD (up to 64GB).

We'll have a review of the Galaxy Note 2 as soon as we can but check out some of these other pictures and let us know what you think.?

Franchising Is a Family Affair | Tariq Farid

For the Goods, Franchising Is a Family Affair

It can truly be said that a franchise is only as successful as its franchisees. I?ve always believed that hard work and dedication pay off?in fact, I?m living proof of that. So when I see those qualities in our franchisees, it gives me great hope for the future of Edible Arrangements International.

Each franchisee has their own story, and I never get tired of hearing them?in fact, we recently launched an entire website devoted to personally profiling our excellent owners: EAFranchise.com.

We recently welcomed new franchisees to Lafayette, Indiana, with quite a heartwarming story of their own. Kathy and Jeff Good have brought their two families together, and are now putting their heads together to make their brand new franchise location the best it can possibly be.

Kathy has a background in both the food service industry and the real estate industry?two worlds that have no doubt prepared her for much of what comes with getting established as a new Edible Arrangements franchisee. Her husband Jeff comes from a strong retail background, with more than 30 years experience. Together they have the kinds of tools that budding entrepreneurs need to succeed.

But while business savvy and experience are certainly important, it takes more than that. You need a certain amount of heart and passion for the business. It takes a special kind of dedicated person. And I find that often those who bring great integrity, drive and positivity to their personal lives are the ones with the greatest chance of success.

Kathy and Jeff first met in 2002, and they married four years later. By doing do, they also joined their families together, since they both have three sons each. They?re now raising five of those six boys together, as well as caring for Kathy?s grandmother, who lives with them. Kathy and Jeff are undoubtedly two people who know a lot about responsibility, but also undoubtedly know a lot about the satisfaction and rewards that comes from living up to responsibilities.

With their two youngest boys approaching college age, Kathy and Jeff fully intend to make their business a family business, and plan to have all the boys pitch in as much as possible during college breaks. With committed parents like Kathy and Jeff leading the way, I have no doubt the boys will be happy to join in.

Kathy and Jeff Good had been hoping to open their own franchised business for the past four years. After careful research, they finally decided on Edible Arrangements, and I?m very glad they did. I wish them tremendous success in their endeavor, and hope their family work ethic will serve as an inspiration to other franchisees, both current and future.
