South Sudan official says Sudan bombs oil field
JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? Sudan's military bombed an oil field in South Sudan on Tuesday, a South Sudan official said, as a dangerous flare-up in border violence appeared to scuttle plans for a presidential summit between the two countries.
Unity State Minister of Information Gideon Gatpan said Sudan dropped at least three bombs near oil fields in the town of Bentiu. Gatpan said the extent of any damage wasn't immediately known.
The attack comes one day after Sudan and South Sudan clashed in the disputed border town of Jau, prompting Sudan to cancel President Omar al-Bashir's trip to meet with South Sudan President Salva Kiir next week.
South Sudan broke away from Sudan last year, but tensions between the longtime foes have remained high.
Among the unresolved issues is the demarcation of the border and an agreement to share oil revenue. South Sudan earlier this year stopped pumping oil because it said Sudan ? which owns the pipelines the south's oil must travel through ? was stealing its oil.
Despite the increased violence, South Sudan held out hope the presidential meeting could still happen. South Sudan Minister of Information Barnaba Benjamin Marial said the south still expects al-Bashir to attend the meeting next week, saying South Sudan had not received an official cancellation from Khartoum.
Marial said the south believes that "forces of war" in Khartoum were trying to derail the peace process, but not al-Bashir himself. He said the south would not take the bait.
"Our president has said clearly we will not be dragged into a senseless war," Marial said. "We will not be dragged into a conflict with Sudan."
In a statement, the White House urged the two sides to "exert the greatest restraint" and said it is "critical" that they proceed with the presidential summit and other meetings.
"Only through direct contact and negotiations over fundamental issues of security and border management ... can Sudan and South Sudan avoid further fighting, achieve vitally needed economic cooperation, and coexist in peace," the statement said.
The two countries disputed which side was the aggressor in Monday's clash in Jau.
Marial said that Sudanese troops "without any provocation" bombed Jau on Monday afternoon before Sudanese ground forces and militia fighters moved in. Marial said that South Sudan troops repulsed the "invading forces" back to the town of Heglig, Sudan. Marial had no information on troop numbers involved or casualty figures.
Sudanese authorities say South Sudan started the fight.
"These attacks are the responsibility of the SPLA and the South Sudanese government," Sudanese Second Vice President Alhaj Adam Yousif said during an address on Sudanese state television late Monday. "The SPLA attacks have targeted our oil and our army." The SPLA is an acronym for South Sudan's military.
Sudan said that the Darfur-based rebel group Justice and Equality Movement, or JEM, fought alongside the SPLA during Monday's clash.
The border violence continued into Tuesday near Benitu, Gatpan said.
"They are hovering and dropping over the northern part of town in the oil fields, the main Unity oil fields," Gatpan said. He said teams were being sent to the oil fields to assess the damage.
Yousif said that given Monday's violence, the presidential visit to sign agreements recently reached in Ethiopia would not happen.
"The visit of President Bashir was tied to good neighborly relations," said Yousif. "There is no way for this summit to take place now."
The cancellation of the summit effectively halts momentum in negotiations between the two countries on issues leftover from a 2005 peace deal that saw South Sudan separate from Sudan last July.
Oil has been the biggest disagreement. The row prompted South Sudan to shut down its oil production in late January, depriving both countries of a critical revenue stream.
Talks were stalled until two weeks ago when the two sides reached an agreement on citizenship and border demarcation. The agreements ? meant to be signed next Tuesday ? were seen as positive steps.
But there were early signs the deal might not hold. Both countries have accused each other of supporting rebel groups on either side of the border, though both sides deny the allegations.
Sudan's Minister of Defense Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein recently said that any rebel activity in Sudan's South Kordofan state could cancel the agreements. Sudan is battling the rebel SPLM-North, which until South Sudan's secession was linked to the south's ruling party ? the SPLA. The south has said it is not supporting the SPLM-North.
The cancellation of the presidential summit will set north-south relations back, said Aly Verjee, an analyst for the Rift Valley Institute.
"The new fighting unfortunately trumps progress made in recent negotiations. It is unsurprising that talks have been canceled given those events," he said.
Marial said South Sudan is still committed to the presidential summit.
"Our invitation still stands as it is. These are forces within the (ruling) NCP party which don't want this process to continue," he said.
The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday that it fears for the safety of refugees who have fled the fighting in South Sudan after the violence flared up in recent days. Spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said more than 16,000 people who have fled the Nuba mountains in Sudan are currently living in South Sudan's Yida settlement.
She said the agency wants to move the refugees away from the border where the fighting is taking place.
In total, more than 105,000 Sudanese have fled to South Sudan and 30,000 have fled to Ethiopia.

Bernanke comments send stocks soaring
Stocks recorded one of their biggest gains of the year Monday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke suggested that the U.S. economy still needs help to produce faster job growth. The Dow jumped 160 points to close at 13241, its third-best showing of the year.

Skip to next paragraphThe Dow Jones industrial average climbed 160.90 points to 13,241.63, its third-best showing this year. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 19.40 points to 1,416.51, its highest close since May 2008.
The Nasdaq composite index, which is closing in on a 20 percent rally for the year, climbed 54.65 points to 3,122.57, its best finish since November 2000.
Health care stocks led the market. The Supreme Court heard the first of three days of arguments on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's 2010 health care law, which will require Americans to carry insurance or pay a penalty.
Health care stocks gained 1.7 percent as a group. Aetna gained 3.1 percent, WellPoint 2.9 percent and UnitedHealth Group 2.7 percent. The court is expected to decide the case in June.
Bernanke, speaking to a group of economists, sounded pessimistic about jobs even though the country added an average of 245,000 jobs each month since December and the unemployment rate has fallen steadily since last summer.
He noted that the number of Americans working and the hours they work are well below where they stood before the 2008 financial crisis. He also suggested that some of the decline in the rate was because discouraged workers gave up looking for work.
Bernanke's comments could mean two things for the market.
On one hand, they suggest that he believes the Fed needs to continue to prop up the economy ? by keeping short-term interest rates near zero and perhaps by buying more bonds later.
"It's been a while since we've had any real direction saying we need a bigger push to clean up unemployment," said Chip Cobb, senior vice president of Bryn Mawr Trust Asset Management in Pennsylvania. "Now we're looking for more stimulus again. It's like we can't get enough."
Others focused on Bernanke's remarks that some recent hiring is merely companies making up for laying off too many people in 2009, rather than a sign of a growing economy.
That could be a relief to investors who were worried that labor costs would grow too quickly and shrink earnings, said Paul Zemsky, head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management in New York.
Some of the jump in stocks could also be because money managers are piling into stocks before the first quarter ends this week. Fund managers who missed out on this quarter's rally will want to show clients they are invested for the next quarter.
"It may not be a wise investment decision, but I think it happens," said Brian Lazorishak, portfolio manager at Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Stocks mostly rose in Europe. Germany's DAX index climbed 1.2 percent after a measure of business confidence in that country rose for the fifth month in a row. France's CAC-40 rose 0.7 percent, and in London, the FTSE rose 0.8 percent.
The euro gained less than a penny against the dollar, to $1.335. Gold rose $23.20 to $1,685.60 an ounce.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.25 percent from 2.23 percent late Friday. Rising yields are a sign that investors are willing to take money out of safer government bonds and put it into riskier investments like stocks.
Among stocks making moves Monday:
? Lions Gate Entertainment climbed 4.5 percent after its movie "The Hunger Games" had a record-setting opening weekend.
? Select Comfort Corp., which makes Sleep Number beds, climbed 3.3 percent after KeyBanc reiterated its "buy" rating on the stock and said shipments across the mattress industry were up in February.
? American Express climbed 2.5 percent after announcing that it will raise its quarterly dividend to 20 cents from 18 cents. It is the company's first dividend increase since November 2007.
? Tenet Healthcare rose 5.5 percent after the hedge fund Glenview Capital Management disclosed that it has taken a 5.5 percent stake in the company. That makes it Tenet's fifth-largest shareholder.
? Safeway, the grocery chain, fell 3.4 percent, worst in the S&P 500, after a Credit Suisse analyst downgraded his rating on the company. The analyst said a pension liability could cause its costs to rise.

The Opportunity for Business
I read a phrase in some article (I forget where) that said that sharing (social sharing) is something that brings a measurable uptick in the opportunity for business. As people are often scrambling to understand the ?ROI? of using social networks and social media, that might well make for a decent start to the conceptual math required to talk about it.
A ?share? is the opportunity for business.
With Great Sharing
Think about this, though. If someone pluses or likes or retweets or otherwise shares your information or ideas via some social channel, there?s quite a lot more that has to happen to make that sharing function a true ?opportunity for business.? If you subscribe to some tweet network that employs robots to retweet your information, do you really believe that the 100 or 1000 or 100000 retweets you?ve bought will translate to a trustworthy passing forward of that information?
Further, even if the information you share is passed on by a trustworthy source, when the next people to receive that sharing signal visit that information and find it to be a pure advertisement of your business, do you think that will compel the secondary source? Thus, perhaps that share is wasted, as well.
The Appearance of Activity and Busy-ness
A lot of what we do in social networks certainly seems busy and active. We tweet. We share. We pass on articles (sometimes because we?ve been asked/begged/pleaded with to share them). We skim a lot. We glance over a post or concept and pass it on without adding much except for that valuable pass-through.
Agencies and other organizations quite often pat their clients on the back and say, ?Wow! Look at that! Your article got 1000 retweets and 2900 likes!? The company owner then smiles politely back and asks, ?And that gives me?.?
We can surely look very busy, doing all this social media work. But that?s not the real work.
The real work is earning a valuable share from a trusted resource to a network of thoughtful and potentially like-minded individuals.
Seek those opportunities for business, and not the blind retweets and busy-ness that can otherwise glitter just as brightly.

Using internet marketing forums to create back links can greatly influence your ranking in the search engines. When post and comment in forums related to your market and then link it back to your website, the search engines rate that back link much higher than a link on an unrelated website. In other words, where the link originates from is also considered by the search engine robots.

You should contribute good, quality information and help others. One of the keys to success is to give more than you get. Experimental physicist Rainer Blatt from the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) in Innsbruck, Austria, will receive the Stern-Gerlach Medal of the German Physical Society. The medal will be presented by Germany's Research Minister Anette Schavan in Berlin on Tuesday 27 March 2012. It is the most prestigious and important award in the field of experimental physics, awarded by the biggest physics society in the world. Rainer Blatt is the first Austrian scientist given the honor to receive this award.
Rainer Blatt is being recognized for his work in the fields of metrology and quantum information processing with electromagnetically stored ions. In its decision the German Physical Society states that "The experimental demonstration of basic building blocks and algorithms of a quantum computer, teleportation of quantum states of matter, the first realization of quantum bytes and the simulation of quantum systems have opened up new scientific research fields and paved the way for future quantum technology." The Stern-Gerlach Medal is the highest honor of the German Physical Society in the field of experimental physics and it is made of pure gold.
Pioneer of quantum computer research
A future quantum computer uses the particular nature of quantum mechanics, which will make calculations possible that are not feasible in classic data processing. In trailblazing experiments Rainer Blatt showed that trapped ions offer a unique experimental platform to encode, process and measure quantum bits. All quantum logical operations are realized by a complex series of laser pulses. A well-known example of quantum algorithms is teleportation; Rainer Blatt and his research group succeeded in producing entangled states, which they then used for quantum algorithms. They started by entangling two ions, in 2008 they entangled eight ions in one quantum byte and now they have pushed the record to 14 entangled ions.
In another experiment Rainer Blatt and his team of scientists showed that trapped ions can also be used in a digital quantum simulator. This research area is based on the propositions of Richard Feynman, who suggested simulating states and dynamics in a highly controlled quantum system to better understand complex many-body systems. If scientists can tailor the quantum state of a many-body system, this quantum technology could be used for applications such as the atomic clock which uses entanglement of ions to achieve an even higher grade of precision.
Inspiration for others
The work done by Rainer Blatt's research group at the Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Innsbruck and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences has inspired researchers beyond the field of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information influencing research in the fields of ultracold atoms and condensed matter physics. "His work provides the basis for future technological application of quantum information," writes the German Physical Society.
The award ceremony will take place during the 76th Annual Meeting of the Society in Berlin, which will be attended by over 6,000 physicists from all over the world. The German Physical Society, whose tradition dates back to 1845, is the oldest national physics society in the world, and with 61,000 members, also the biggest.

Feeding Cats Kibble Can Make Them Obese | Central Florida Online

For many cat owners feeding their cats with a high quality dry kibble has been the standard. Some experts are now saying that these commercial diets are at the center of an epidemic of obesity and diabetes among our feline friends. So, how do you know what?s the purrrfect food for your kitty?
To try and find an answer, veterinarians and nutritionists are looking at the evolutionary history of our cats. All of our felines, purebred and mixed, are descended from a Middle Eastern wild cat that goes by the simple name of Desert Cat. As with most desert creatures, our cats? ancestors evolved to obtain most of their water from the food they ate. In the cat?s case, the majority of their moisture came from hunting lizards, small rodents, birds and insects.
And, unlike their canine cousins, these cats didn?t routinely eat plant material as a significant portion of their diet. Cats evolved to be obligate carnivores, meaning that all their nutritional needs can be met through eating animal tissue. Some experts are concerned that most of our pet cats are eating dry cat food made with significant amounts of cereal grains. In a recent paper published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA), author Dr. Deb Zoran speculates that the use of grains in our cats? diets as well as the routine use of a dry food has potentially predisposed a large percentage of cats to diabetes, obesity and several other issues, including blockages in the urinary tract.
One solution proposed by experts is to use grain-free, canned cat foods. Unfortunately, not all cat owners like this option as they feel it is wasteful (the canned food dries out quickly) and more expensive. Using a dry food offers the owner convenience and less of a mess to clean up. There are even cats who refuse to eat canned diets. Moreover, some veterinarians feel that cats will overeat canned diets just as easily as dry and the sticky wet foods promote more dental issues than the dry kibble. Finally, because canned diets of the meat and gravy variety are only complete and balanced if the pet eats the whole portion, cats who lick up the gravy and leave the meat are at risk for nutritional deficiencies. I advise to look for holistic, grain-free dry formulas like Wellness diets.
Although nutrition does play a part in diseases like diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and urinary obstruction, other factors, such as genetics and environmental issues, also influence the progression of these illnesses. So, a switch to canned diets may not prevent the development of these diseases.
Choose foods wisely. There are many commercial diets, canned and dry, prepared by companies who have invested years in developing nutritionally-sound diets for pets. Don?t be fooled by fancy label claims or celebrity endorsements. Your veterinarian is a great resource to help you find a quality food for your pet.
Remember to start any new diets by mixing the old food with the new over a period of days. Sudden changes in diet can be hard on a cat?s digestive system or could cause them to stop eating entirely.
Finally, remember to ?count calories? with your cats. Leaving bowls full of dry kibble AND feeding canned diets can lead to overweight kitties and the problems mentioned above. Feed small meals frequently throughout the day to mimic a cat?s natural ?grazing? activity. Some owners even hide small amounts of kibble around the house for cats to ?hunt.?

Working out in the early hours
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Night owls, insomniacs, shift workers and other denizens of the dark are finding less need to fit their workout time into the nine-to-five world.
More gyms are remaining open round the clock, experts say, spurred by advances in surveillance and security technology, clients' ever more fluid work habits and a generation of multi-tasking consumers.
"A lot of people work untraditional times and they take advantage of clubs open at all hours," said Carl Liebert, CEO of 24 Hour Fitness, an international chain of health clubs, most of them open around the clock.
Liebert said his 30-year-old chain has seen an increase in after-hours traffic, with five to 15 percent of clients, depending on location, working out between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
"I think people have changed," he said. "They're online; they're connected day and night. When I grew up I went to bed at night and got up in the morning. Between those times I wasn't multitasking."
Liebert said common night visitors include people who work out to relieve stress, insomniacs, and hard-core fitness fanatics who wouldn't miss a workout and prefer a gym less crowded.
The number of health clubs open 24 hours has soared from just couple hundred five years ago to more than 2,000 today, according to IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, a trade association of fitness facilities.
Spokesperson Meredith Poppler said while most club goers still work out during regular hours, technology has enabled small, often rural, clubs to operate overnight, and sometimes unstaffed.
"Cameras on the doors, cameras in the clubs, safety buttons each member carries set them apart," said Poppler. "Many of the operators are in the clubs at certain times of days, but other times the clubs are truly unstaffed."
Access is granted via a swipe card or key fob.
Poppler said the largest franchising company of 24-hour key clubs is Anytime Fitness, based in Hastings, Minnesota.
Earlier this year the chain reported that late-night workouts from midnight to 3:00 a.m. totalled 1.2 million in 2011, up from 900,000 the previous year.
"Anytime Fitness finds that 24/7 access caters to everyone from your typical night owls, to doctors and nurses, and other public service officials who work odd hours," said spokesperson Tara Dosh.
Liz Neporent, spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise, belongs to a 24-hour gym in New York City.
She said physiologically it doesn't matter when you choose to work out, although some studies suggest that morning exercisers may be more likely to stick with their program. More important is finding a time that's convenient.
Neporent, who has experience operating health clubs, said while she prefers to see staff on duty at night, sometimes it's not economically feasible.
"A lot of residential gyms in apartment buildings are lightly manned or unmanned," she said, adding that for turnkey gyms, cameras are a must.
Neporent said when she does hit the gym at 3:00 a.m., the crowd's different.
"At 6:00 a.m. you get the professionals going to work. Late morning you see a lot of stay-at-home moms. Overnight I tend to see more creative types," she said. "More piercings, more tattoos. I have met interesting people at three or four in the morning."

Research will help understand body's response to superbugs
How and when our blood clots is one of those incredibly complex and important processes in our body that we rarely think about. If your blood doesn't clot and you cut yourself, you could bleed to death, if your blood clots too much, you could be in line for a heart attack or stroke. Dr. Hans Vogel, a professor at the University of Calgary, has thought a lot about blot clotting and recently published research in the prestigious Journal of the American Chemical Society that helps to better understand the clotting process.
Vogel and his graduate student Hao Huang were able to determine the molecular 3D structure of a protein in blood platelets and a receptor that sticks through the membrane of the cell to the outside. Platelets are tiny cells specialized for clotting reactions. The receptor protein is unique for platelets and directly controls blood clot formation. Other scientists have unsuccessfully attempted to map this structure, but Huang and Vogel were the first to make it work.
"The goal of the research is to provide a molecular level understanding of the blood clot regulatory process," says Vogel, of the Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science. "Eventually the long term goal is to interfere in that, although one has to be extremely careful with such a delicate process. Oftentimes, these molecular structures are useful for pharmaceutical companies and for follow-up research projects that take them as a starting point to develop new drugs."
This particular piece of research is also related to Vogel's lab's larger goal, which is to figure out how our body responds to foreign invasions of bacteria, particularly in relation to superbugs that aren't treatable by antibiotics. "You don't really want to have an infection starting in and around a blood clot," says Vogel. "So once a platelet is lodged into position it releases all sorts of proteins and then it attracts all these factors that are antimicrobial. Platelets get together with white blood cells and together they orchestrate a really important antimicrobial response."
The next step in Vogel's research is to try to find out more about this antimicrobial response and build on it. "A lot of science is putting pieces into a large puzzle," says Vogel. "I've been involved in active research for 30 years. If you look over your career, then you make many incremental steps forward, but everything together builds a big picture. The paper we recently published proved to be a very important piece of the puzzle." Vogel's research in this area is supported by Alberta Innovates Health Solutions and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.
