Veterans have a distinct place in our society as those who have carried the heavy load of sacrifice. They have a distinct place in the world of philanthropy as well; they are the only social cause that is not charitable in nature.
Yes, there are charities that help veterans, but these charities only exist because the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) is charged with the all-consuming mission to care for all aspects of a human life.
Whether it is education, employment, benefits, health care, and housing the VA has been tasked with a difficult mission and when they fall short, nonprofits help to cover the gaps. These nonprofits are not doing this because of charity: They are ensuring that our nation honors the promise we have made to our veterans for their selfless service.
Yet, there is another pillar of veteran support which understands that we must not only keep our promises, but we must invest in our veterans much like we invested in them after WWII as a catalyst for national success.

The Promise

As a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan I am truly appreciative of our nations support of the war-fighter regardless of feelings about the war. Unlike the Vietnam generation, our nation has grown the capacity to understand the difference between the policy and those who are charged with implementing that policy.

Yet, I am also pessimistic because veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan represent less than 1 percent of the entire population -- this limits the political capital previous veteran generations were able to muster in order to force the political class to not only keep their promises, but keep them in the spirit in which they were made.

This erosion of what veterans deserve can already be seen in some of the proposed budget cuts that will impact both the VA and the Military Retirement System, as covered by Military.com

Whether it is the House Budget Committee, chaired by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), which is studying a plan to save money by canceling enrollment of any veteran who doesn't have a service-connected medical condition (even though the process for establishing service connection is a national disgrace) or the Obama Administration's desire to re-examine the military retirement system, which they have called "out of line with most other government or private retirement plans" (though by its nature military service has no government or private equivalent), the veteran promise is already under siege.

Again, since these changes only impact a sliver of our society there has been no major outrage from those who have recently made their voices the loudest like Occupy Wall Street or those aligned with the Tea Party movements. It is telling that when Wisconsin was shut down because of changes to retirement and collective bargaining issues, there was a heated national dialogue by both conservatives and liberals on the impact to our nation.

Sadly, our veterans get only a muted response when faced with unconscionable cuts to services and benefits that were promised to them and more importantly, that they earned through their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their families.

The Investment

It is under this backdrop that we must not only see our veterans through the political lens of what was promised, but through the paradigm that their success is a sound strategic investment. It will become critical for those who care about supporting our veterans to articulate a message that transcends the needs of just the veteran, and converges those needs into alignment with that of the larger society.

An example of this convergence can be seen through the costs that are sunk into current military training. According to MSNBC, the total cost of training a service member in today's military can range from $44,887 (Marine Infantryman) to $19 million (F-16 fighter pilot), these costs do not take into factor leadership and technical training that a service member receives as they progress in their military career.

As a citizen, it is critical for us to understand how this investment impacts our national security. As a taxpayer it is critical for us to leverage this investment not only benefit of our military, but for our larger society as well.

We should be clamoring to integrate these heroes into our communities and industries. During these difficult economic times, it is apparent that our nation needs plowshares and the men and women who can use them to make our society a fertile place for continued success. To not leverage our returning veterans' talents would be self-defeating and a crime against our future children who are in desperate need of leadership and heroes.

Organizations such as Mission Continues, Team Rubicon, Service Nation, Work Vessels for Vets, and Leave No Veteran Behind are just a few of the innovative veteran nonprofits that understand that supporting our veterans will not only make us feel good as a nation, but is an investment that will ultimately make us a better nation.

These nonprofits understand that our returning veterans are uniquely prepared through their training and experiences to take on complex problems and provide leadership to solve those problems. They understand that our veterans cannot continue to help our nation if they are seen only through the labels of PTSD, TBI, or as damaged goods. They understand that a veteran's potential must be utilized for societies benefit.

As a nation we must support these organizations and incorporate their ethos not only for the veterans' sake, but for ours as well. Finally, we must understand that keeping our promise to our returning veterans and investing in them so that they can positively impact our nation's future is not charitable... it is simply the smart thing to do.

Occupy Oakland: 400 arrested after violent protest

Crews cleaned up Oakland's historic City Hall on Sunday from damage inflicted overnight during violent anti-Wall Street protests that resulted in about 400 arrests, marking one of the largest mass arrests since nationwide protests began last year.

At a press conference on Sunday, Oakland police and city officials said they did not have a final tally of arrests. Earlier in the day, the city's emergency operations office put the figure at around 400. The skirmishes injured three officers and at least one demonstrator.

Police said a group of protesters burned an American flag in front of City Hall, then entered the building and destroyed a vending machine, light fixtures and a historic scale model of the edifice. The city's 911 emergency system was overwhelmed during the disturbances.

"While City Hall sustained damage, we anticipate that all city offices will be open for regular business tomorrow," said Deanna Santana, Oakland city administrator.

Oakland has become an unlikely flashpoint for the national "Occupy" protests against economic inequality that began last year in New York's financial district and spread to dozens of cities.

The protests in most cities have been peaceful and sparked a national debate over how much of the country's wealth is held by the richest 1 percent of the population. President Barack Obama has sought to capitalize on the attention by calling for higher taxes on the richest Americans.

Occupy protests focused on Oakland after a former Marine and Iraq war veteran, Scott Olsen, was critically injured during a demonstration in October. Protesters said he was hit in the head by a tear gas canister but authorities have never said exactly how he was hurt.

The Occupy movement appeared to lose momentum late last year as police cleared protest camps in several cities.

Violence erupted again in Oakland on Saturday afternoon when protesters attempted to take over the apparently empty downtown convention center to establish a new headquarters and draw attention to the problem of homelessness.

'Violent splinter group'
Police in riot gear moved in to drive back the crowd, which they estimated at about 500 protesters.

"Officers were pelted with bottles, metal pipe, rocks, spray cans, improvised explosive devices and burning flares," the Oakland Police Department said in a statement. "The Oakland Police Department deployed smoke, tear gas and beanbag projectiles in response to this activity."

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan accused a "violent splinter group" of the Occupy movement of fomenting the Saturday protests and using the city as its playground. Protesters have accused the city of overreacting and using heavy-handed tactics.

Oakland officials on Sunday were inspecting damage inside City Hall that was caused by about 50 Occupy protesters who broke in and smashed glass display cases, spray-painted graffiti, and burned the?U.S. and California flags.

The break-in on Saturday was the culmination of a day of clashes between protesters and police. At least 300 people were arrested on charges ranging from vandalism and failure to disperse.

At least three officers and one protester were injured.

Quan said Occupy protesters have caused an estimated $2 million in damages from vandalism since October. She said the cost to the city related to the Occupy Oakland protests is pegged at about $5 million.

Some Reactions After the Challenger Explosion (ContributorNetwork)

The space shuttle Challenger explosion on Jan. 28, 1986, with its seven-member crew was the most traumatic disaster of its type in history. It occurred before a live audience, broadcast around the world in real time.

While the causes of the disaster have been covered ad infinitum, there were some little noted reactions that bear touching on.

President Ronald Reagan Addresses the Nation

On the day the Challenger was destroyed, President Reagan was putting the finishing touches on the State of the Union speech. It had been hoped he would be able to mention the space shuttle mission, which would have been in orbit at the time, with Christa McAuliffe, the teacher in space.

Instead, Reagan gave another speech, in a televised address to the nation recorded at the Teaching American History page. The speech, one of the most moving of his presidency, had everything a memorial speech should have. It touched on the sacrifices of the crew and the importance of the space program. It had a historical reference to Francis Drake, who died at sea. It ended with a quote from "High Flight," the greatest aviation poem ever written. He said that the Challenger crew had "slipped the surly bonds of Earth" to "touch the face of God."

Three days later, Reagan journeyed to the Johnson Spaceflight Center in Houston to give another comforting speech, this time to the bereaved space workers who felt keenly the devastating loss. He had something fitting to say about each of the fallen Challengers. He gave the requisite vow to continue the space program and to not give up exploration in the face of tragedy.

The Challenger Center

In an attempt to turn tragedy into something positive, the families of the Challenger crew, particularly June Scobee (now June Scobee-Rogers), herself a teacher, created the Challenger Center for Space Flight Education. There are Challenger Centers across the U.S., in Canada, Great Britain and South Korea. The mission of the Challenger Center is to further science education through a variety of programs, including training teachers in the art of teaching science.

Challenger Memorials

There are a number of Challenger Memorials, including one at Arlington National Cemetery and a Space Shuttle Memorial Park near the Johnson Spaceflight Center. The film "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" contained a tribute, "The cast and crew of Star Trek wish to dedicate this film to the men and women of the spaceship Challenger whose courageous spirit shall live to the 23rd century and beyond..." Seven asteroids were named for each of the Challenger crew. According to NASA, craters on the moon have also been named after the Challenger Seven.

Suu Kyi galvanizes once-repressed Myanmar politics (AP)

DAWEI, Myanmar ? Euphoric seas of supporters waved opposition party flags and offered yellow garlands. They lined crumbling roads for miles and climbed atop trees, cars and roofs as Aung San Suu Kyi spoke at impromptu rallies. Some cried as her convoy passed.

Cheered by tens of thousands, the 66-year-old opposition leader electrified Myanmar's repressive political landscape everywhere she traveled Sunday on her first political tour of the countryside since her party registered to run in a historic ballot that could see her elected to parliament for the first time.

"We will bring democracy to the country," Suu Kyi said to roaring applause as her voice boomed through loudspeakers from the balcony of a National League for Democracy office in the southern coastal district of Dawei. "We will bring rule of law ... and we will see to it that repressive laws are repealed."

As huge crowds screamed "Long Live Daw Aung San Suu Kyi!" and others held banners saying "You Are Our Heart," she said: "We can overcome any obstacle with unity and perseverance, however difficult it may be."

Suu Kyi's campaign and by-elections due April 1 are being watched closely by the international community, which sees the vote as a crucial test of whether the military-backed government is really committed to reform.

The mere fact that Suu Kyi was able to speak openly in public in Dawei ? and her supporters were able to greet her en masse without fear of reprisal ? was proof of dramatic progress itself. Such scenes would have been unthinkable just a year ago, when the long-ruling junta was still in power and demonstrations were all but banned.

Suu Kyi's visit was equivalent to waking a sleeping dragon, said environmental activist Aung Zaw Hein.

"People had been afraid to discuss politics for so long," he said. "Now that she's visiting, the political spirit of people has been awakened."

Looking into the giant crowds, Hein added: "I've never seen people's faces look like this before. For the first time, they have hope in their eyes."

Businesman Ko Ye said he was ecstatic that Suu Kyi came, and like most people here, he welcomed the recent dramatic changes that made her trip possible. "We are all hoping for democracy," the 49-year-old said, "but we're afraid these reforms can be reversed at anytime."

After nearly half a century of iron-fisted military rule, a nominally civilian government took office last March. The new government has surprised even some of its toughest critics by releasing hundreds of political prisoners, signing cease-fire deals with ethnic rebels, increasing media freedoms and easing censorship laws.

Suu Kyi's party boycotted the 2010 election as neither free nor fair. It sought to have its legal status restored after the government amended electoral laws. Her party has been cleared to offer candidates in the April vote, and an Election Commission ruling on Suu Kyi's candidacy is expected in February.

Some critics are concerned the government is using its opening with Suu Kyi to show it's committed to reform. The government needs her support to get years of harsh Western sanctions lifted.

On Sunday, Suu Kyi said the opposition had struggled for democracy for decades, but the best way to do that now was to fight "from within parliament." But she also expressed caution over the challenges ahead. "It's easy to make problems, but it's not easy to implement them," she said. "We have a lot to do."

An NLD victory would be highly symbolic, but her party would have limited power since the legislature is overwhelmingly dominated by the military and the ruling pro-military party. Up for grabs are 48 seats vacated by lawmakers who were appointed to the Cabinet and other posts.

Suu Kyi has spent 15 of the past 23 years under house arrest, and as a result, has rarely traveled outside Yangon. Although she conducted one successful day of rallies north of Yangon last year, a previous political tour to greet supporters in 2003 sparked a bloody ambush of her convoy that saw her forcibly confined at her lakeside home.

She was finally released from house arrest in late 2010, just days after the elections that installed the current government and led to the junta's official disbandment.

Suu Kyi met with party members in Dawei, including one running for a parliament seat. She will make similar political trips to other areas, including the country's second-largest city, Mandalay, in early February before officially campaigning for her own seat, party spokesman Nyan Win said.

Suu Kyi is hoping to represent the constituency of Kawhmu, a poor district just south of Yangon where some villagers' homes were destroyed by Cyclone Nargis in 2008.

Lay Lay Myint, a 35-year-old grocery store manager, said Suu Kyi's platform in parliament would allow her to "let the world know what is happening" in Myanmar.

"People have been living in fear here," Myint said. "Just seeing her hear makes us braver, more courageous."

Thyroid cancer, fracking and nuclear power | Peak Oil News and ...

Thyroid cancer cases have more than doubled since 1997 in the United States, while deadly industrial practices that contaminate groundwater with radiation and other carcinogens are also rising.

New information released by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that 56,460 people will develop thyroid cancer in 2012 and 1,780 will die from it.

That?s up from 16,000 thyroid cancer cases in 1997 ? a whopping 253% increase in fifteen years, while the US population went up only 18%.

From 1980 to 1996, thyroid cancer increased nearly 300%, while the population increased by (again) 18%.

Most thyroid cancers don?t develop for 10-30 years after radiation exposure, but the monstrous spike in thyroid cancer from 1980-2012 is only partly the result of Pennsylvania?s Three Mile Island nuclear accident in 1979 (TMI).

Pennsylvania, with its nine nuclear reactors, does have the highest incidence of thyroid cancer across nearly all demographics among 45* states, reports epidemiologist Joseph Mangano, MPH MBA, of the Radiation and Public Health Project. In 2009, he analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control?s national survey of thyroid cancer incidence for the years 2001-2005 and compared it with proximity to nuclear power stations, finding:

[M]ost U.S. counties with the highest thyroid cancer incidence are in a contiguous area of eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and southern New York. Exposure to radioactive iodine emissions from 16 nuclear power reactors within a 90 mile radius in this area ? are likely a cause of rising incidence rates.

TMI also can?t explain why the thyroid cancer rate for the four counties flanking Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in New York was 66% above the national rate in 2001-2005.

Other, more subtle sources may also be contributing to hiked thyroid cancer rates, like leaking nuclear power plants and hydraulic fracturing, both of which contaminate air, soil and groundwater with radiation and other nasty chemicals.

Indeed, remarking on this, Mangano (who recently co-authored a controversial study with toxicologist Janette Sherman suggesting a link between Fukushima fallout and US cancer deaths numbering from 14,000 to 20,000) said:

From 1970-1993, Indian Point released 17.50 curies of airborne I-131 and particulates?. [That] amount exceeded the official total of 14.20 curies released from the 1979 Three Mile Island accident. In 2007, officials that operate the Indian Point plant reported levels of I-131 in the local air, water, and milk, each of which is a potential vector for ingestion.

Iodine-131, or I-131, is a radioactive isotope produced by nuclear fission.?

Fracking a ?Dirty Bomb?

Radiation isn?t released into the environment only via nuclear plants and bombs. Geologist Tracy Bank found that fracking mobilizes rock-bound uranium, posing a further radiation risk to our groundwater. She presented her findings at the American Geological Society meeting in Denver last November.

Because of some 65 hazardous chemicals used in fracking operations, former industry insider, James Northrup, calls it a ?dirty bomb.? With 30 years of experience as an independent oil and gas producer, he explains:

The volume of fluid in a hydrofrack can exceed three million gallons, or almost 24 million pounds of fluid, about the same weight as 7,500 automobiles. The fracking fluid contains chemicals that would be illegal to use in warfare under the rules of the Geneva Convention. This all adds up to a massive explosion of a ?dirty bomb? underground.

What?s underground seeps into our groundwater.

Thomas House and his wife have become ill since New Dominion, LLC began drilling for oil and gas behind their home in Wellston, Oklahoma. He?s tested the water for barium and strontium, and indoor air quality for BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and styrenes).

Though none of the levels exceed EPA standards, he insists the drilling operations are causing their illness.

?We have been getting sick from headaches, nose bleeds, rashes, vomiting, burning eyes, and breathing problems for the last year,? he told me.

House is reliant on the Veterans Administration for health care, but it refuses to test him for BTEX poisoning.?

Radioactive Drinking Water

Though scientists have associated thyroid cancer with water supplies contaminated by nitrates (another knock against industrial agriculture), it is usually indicative of radiation poisoning, as the thyroid sucks up iodine ? radioactive or not. Those with not enough iodine in their diets are more susceptible to absorbing I-131.

NCI says that the main sources of radiation exposure are X-rays, nuclear fallout and radiated food and drinking water. The Centers for Disease Control reports that women are three times more susceptible to thyroid cancer than men, with white women being most susceptible. Rather than noticing any symptoms, most often, they discover a lump on their neck.

The good news is that 95 percent of thyroid cancer is successfully treated.

The bad news is that radiation exposure is also coming from our food and water supply.

For over a year, a Houston news station has been reporting on a governmental cover-up of radiation in drinking water. KHOU says that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality under-reported radioactive contaminants in drinking water for over 20 years.

But not just Texas authorities, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also low-balled radiation stats by simply not looking for specific radioactive elements, which can be more common and more dangerous than, say, Strontium-90.

Eventually, Texas shut down two of Houston?s water wells shown to be radioactive.

From an investigative series by the Associated Press last year, we learned that 75 percent of US nuclear power plants leak radioactive materials. Documents from 48 of 65 commercial nuclear power sites showed that radioactive tritium leaked ? often into groundwater ? in concentrations exceeding the federal drinking water standard, and sometimes at hundreds of times the limit.?

Nukes, Fracking and Earthquakes

The global fallout from Fukushima?s nuclear meltdown means our food and water absorbed radioactive fallout. But, we also see an increasing number of earthquakes from fracking operations that further threaten nuclear plants, which are old, leaking and ?brittle? (AP?s word).

Information compiled by Treehugger last year showed that of the 104 commercial nuclear power plants and 34 nuclear research stations, many sit in seismically active locations.

Though earthquake risk in Texas is considered very low, last October, Atascosa County saw a rare 4.8 magnitude quake centered 130 miles from the South Texas Project nuclear power plant. The temblor originated in Fashing Field, a highly productive oil and gas field. One company, Momentum Oil and Gas, is producing 3.8 million cubic feet of gas per day from the field.

Many states that normally had very low seismicity have seen an incredible upswing in earthquake frequency with the advent of hydraulic fracturing, which the feds have long known about. As far back as 1966, federal authorities suspected the fracking-earthquake link so strongly that they shut down Rocky Mountain Arsenal?s 12,000-foot injection well after several quakes rattled Denver.

In 1981, researchers suggested that mobile pressure dynamics could explain epicenters some ways distant from such wells.

Ohio recently shut down two fracking waste injection wells after a New Year?s Eve earthquake, and last November New York imposed a statewide moratorium. Ohio has two nuclear power plants (both on Lake Erie) and New York has five, operating six reactors.

Ohio?s 5.0 earthquake on January 31, 1986 that rocked eleven states and Ontario, Canada was centered 11 miles south of the Perry Nuclear Plant. Researchers suggested the quake was induced by fracking, writing in 1988:

Three deep waste disposal wells are currently operating within 15 km of the epicentral region and have been responsible for the injection of nearly 1.2 billion liters of fluid at pressures reaching 112 bars above ambient at a nominal depth of 1.8 km. Estimates of stress inferred from commercial hydrofracturing measurements suggest that the state of stress in northeastern Ohio is close to the theoretical threshold for failure along favorably oriented, preexisting fractures.

Not only preexisting fractures, but new ones created by the massive surge in earthquake swarms also present a risk. As modern horizontal fracturing techniques are employed, earthquake frequency goes up.

From 1900-1970, Arkansas experienced 60 earthquakes. After fracking operations picked up in the mid-1970s, that number jumped exponentially. Per the Advanced National Seismic System, in 2010 alone, Arkansas felt over 700 earthquakes; in 2011, it endured over 800.

The number of quakes in 2010 and ?11 represents a 2,400% increase over the number of quakes in the first 70 years of the 20^th century, before horizontal fracking began. With that spike in frequency, is it any wonder that a new fault has opened up in Arkansas? Geologists say the new fault shows a history of 7+ magnitude earthquakes.

Though the 2001-2005 thyroid incidence data reveals that Arkansas has the lowest incidence of thyroid cancer of all 45 states surveyed, that may change should the new fault become seismically active and damage the state?s two 40-year-old nuclear reactors.

Of note, Arkansas? nuclear reactors are run by Entergy, which operates eleven others including 40-year-old Vermont Yankee (strontium-90 found in nearby fish last August) and New York?s nearly 40-year-old Indian Point (failed inspection and sought over 100 safety exemptions last year).

Pennsylvania is another strong fracking state, vulnerable to earthquakes originating within or outside its borders. It also houses nine nuclear reactors at five locations. A swarm of small earthquakes occurred near Dillsburg from 2008 until early 2011, reports the state?s Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Dillsburg is 16 miles from Three Mile Island, which still operates one nuclear reactor.

Last August, most of the east coast felt a 5.8 magnitude quake whose epicenter was just 11 miles from two reactors at the North Anna nuclear power plant in Virginia. Both 30-year-old reactors had to be shut down. RT reports:

The odds of a quake exceeding a magnitude of 5.5 occurring in central Virginia are so slim that Dominion Power determined only around six quakes of that size would occur in the area over the next 10,000 years.?

Protect Your Water Supply

Radioactive particles damage bones, DNA and tissue, including the thyroid. Water softeners, ion exchange, carbon filters or reverse osmosis water-treatment systems can be installed in the home to reduce concentration levels. The National Sanitation Foundation certifies various products for efficacy in reducing or eliminating particular contaminants.

Police open probe into 'malicious' mail at QPR

LONDON (AP) -Police have opened an investigation after Queens Park Rangers reportedly received a package in the mail addressed to defender Anton Ferdinand that contained a bullet.

QPR contacted police on Friday, a day before the team plays Chelsea for the first time since Blues captain John Terry was charged with racially abusing Ferdinand in a Premier League match in October.

Metropolitan Police says in a statement that "we are investigating an allegation of malicious communication received today at QPR football club."

SKY Sports is reporting that the package contained a bullet.

Chelsea and QPR put out a joint statement Wednesday ahead of the FA Cup fourth-round match appealing for fans to "show the world that hatred has no place in our game."

Green energy isn't always good energy

Wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal seem mostly benign -- in part because they are still a small part of the energy equation. But when green gets big, it can be controversial.

Solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal are widely considered benign energy sources. For the most part, they are. They harness nature without producing noxious emissions or significant waste streams. They don?t require strip mining, punching a hole in the seabed, fracturing bedrock, or splitting atoms. From sailboats to south-facing gardens, hot springs to millstreams, green energy?s friendly reputation predates hydrocarbon and fission by centuries.

But in their modern application, even these ancient energy sources have downsides. Most photovoltaic cells, for instance, contain nitrogen trifluoride, which the Scripps Institution of Oceanography says is a potent greenhouse gas when it escapes into the air. Solar cells also block sunlight from grass and flowers that otherwise would bask in it. When you dam a river, you constrict fish migrations and deprive alluvial plains of nutrients. Geothermal often means power plants atop scenic areas. And wind, the subject of this week?s cover story, needs enormous wind turbines. Birds and bats fly into them. Noise and visual pollution can be annoying.

Wait. I know what you are thinking: Green energy drawbacks are tiny compared with Chernobyl, Fukushima, the Exxon Valdez, the BP oil spill, and global warming. Absolutely right. But part of the reason the drawbacks are minor is that green energy is still a fraction of overall energy production. A few windmills on the Zuider Zee are as charming as tulips and wooden shoes. But when you erect acres of wind turbines, you?ve got a scale problem.

Consider the world before the internal combustion engine. Today, most people consider the automobile a Faustian bargain, a huge convenience that is nevertheless blamed for altering our landscape and atmosphere. In its first years, however, the horseless carriage was not just a technological marvel but an answer to a significant crisis. As the urban population of people exploded in the 19th century, so did the urban horse population. The effect on the environment, public safety, and public health was awful and heading for catastrophic, writes Eric Morris in an excellent 2007 article (you can read it here) in the University of California?s Transportation Center?s Access magazine: ?One New York prognosticator of the 1890s concluded that by 1930 the horse droppings would rise to Manhattan?s third-story windows. A public health and sanitation crisis of almost unimaginable dimensions loomed.? And horses, which could rear up or bolt for no apparent reason, were even more dangerous per thousand people than automobiles. They were also exploited mercilessly in the grim economics of 19th-century cities.?

Black Beauty is a magnificent creature with an insignificant waste stream. Ten thousand are an environmental nightmare. Henry Ford helped solve that problem. But now we burn through so many hydrocarbons that we have a new environmental crisis.

Green energy is good energy. But it is not perfect. Think about wind turbines. Over the Christmas holidays, a 26-story-tall one popped up by the highway I take to work. It?s big ? ?War of the Worlds? big. That single turbine is a novelty. An army of them can become a huge controversy, as has happened off the picturesque south coast of Cape Cod, where a massive wind farm on Nantucket Sound is inching forward amid intense local opposition.

Now wind energy is exploding across the globe. In areas such as Mexico?s Isthmus of Tehuantapec, questions of exploitative development have accompanied the boom. That is likely to be the case in many parts of the developing world, which has all too frequently been despoiled to feed the energy and raw-materials needs of industrial nations. NIMBY issues and indigenous resistance are bound to multiply as fast as windmills, solar farms, and other green energy installations as the world races to diversify away from hydrocarbons to protect the climate and at the same time accommodate both the 7 billion people now on the planet and the 3 billion more that are likely to arrive by 2070.

We solved the horse problem with horsepower. Now we have a horsepower problem. Solving it presents a new set of problems. There?s always a job out there for a new problem solver.

AiP Stands With Context and Variation

My SciAm colleague and friend Kate Clancy of Context and Variation has been the target of disturbing trollish behavior recently. She is experiencing what many female bloggers do at some point while writing for an online audience and she?s rallying her community by speaking candidly about her experiences:

Even when the threats aren?t physical, the antagonism towards women has been nasty. I have been called a sexist, someone who plays victim, told I should be fired, and worse, personal things that I will not relay here. I have had my writing challenged by brash claims regarding my character or intent without any attempt to build a case with evidence.

And even though I can look at the evidence and my writing, at what I do and what I stand for, and know these claims are ridiculous, each one of these attacks shatters me.

Back at my old blog, these attacks would have had little effect on me. At my old blog my posse would have crowded them out, shrugged their way past them until the attackers were shouting uselessly at the periphery. My old blog was a warm, inviting space where I could take risks because people were willing to take them with me.

I could blame the loss of my posse on the commenting system or the more heavily-male readership here at Scientific American and throw up my hands. But I also know I have not been modeling the appropriate behavior to encourage you to get comfortable in my new place. I have left almost all attack comments up rather than delete them because I worried that getting rid of them would open me up to more attacks, or make it look as though I was silencing my opposition. And so I left them, and waited, hoping someone would come and back me up. Sometimes someone would.

Supporting a female blogger under attack in a comment thread is a very risky endeavor. If you are a male ally, you may be afraid of making things worse. If you are a woman, you may be afraid of drawing some of the attack on to you. The attack may also just feel like it?s not your business. It takes a very brave person who doesn?t mind sticking their nose in to put together a reasoned response and handle the blowback.

By letting the oppressive and rude behavior in my comment threads get out of control, I have put my posse in an impossible position. I have silenced potential commenters, and lost the most valuable part of my blogging.

AiP has also received its share of trollish comments and emails that also left me feeling raw and exposed. It is amazing what people will ask you?especially if you?re female. My response was to delete comments and emails and not respond. But sometimes it feels as though that?s the only response out there, and that can be disheartening.?Kate is right: It will only stop when we?that?s you and me?take a hand in making it stop.

It has not been an entirely easy transition from the independent home of Anthropology in Practice to the Scientific American network. There, like Kate, I knew I had a steady group of readers who knew the tone and style of the space and could and would step in to help monitor and maintain the community. A few of you have followed me here, and I thank you for that. It delights me to see your names in the comment box. I also understand why the community has overall been slow to grow here?having to register can be prohibitive to commenting?but I am confident we will get there again, Readers. (We are working on changing the registration requirements, but that will take time. In truth, registration is a bit of a joke. You can register as a pseud or under your name and only I see your email address?whatever email address you choose to enter.)

Kate has issued a new commenting policy for Context and Variation which goes a long way toward re/creating a constructive, supportive community where debate and discussion can occur intelligently and respectfully. I support her stand for her space, and in that spirit want to ask you, Readers, to rally with us: register, and let us know you?re there.

Act Out the Metaphor of "Thinking Outside the Box" to Boost Creativity [Brain Hack]

We've all heard the saying, "think outside the box," but it turns out the clich? might hold some truth to it. In a recent study published in Psychological Science, researchers found that people who acted out the metaphor could indeed boost creativity.

In the experiment, participants where seated inside or outside a cardboard box. They were then asked to complete a simple experiment used to test their creativity. Those outside the box tested better than those inside. Coauthor of the study Angel Leung suggests the metaphor of thinking outside the box is true and easily applicable to daily life:

Having a leisurely walk outdoors or freely pacing around may help us break our mindset. Also, we may consider getting away from Dilbert's cubicles and creating open office spaces to free up our minds.

Death toll from cruise ship wreck up to 15

More bodies were found over the weekend aboard the cruise ship that capsized off the coast of Italy, raising the official death toll to 13. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Updated at 4:30 p.m. ET: GIGLIO, Italy -- Italian officials say two more bodies have been recovered from the capsized Costa Concordia, bringing the death toll of the accident to 15.

Franco Gabrielli, the national civil protection agency official in charge of the search, said Monday that divers recovered the bodies of two women from the ship's Internet cafe.

The recovery of the two brings to 17 the number of known missing.

Italy says Hungarian authorities have dismissed as "groundless" a report that an unregistered Hungarian woman was aboard the Costa Concordia cruise ship when it capsized.

Italy's Civil Protection Department released a statement Monday from the Hungarian embassy in Rome saying that information obtained by Hungarian authorities has led them "to unequivocally conclude that the indication regarding a missing Hungarian woman is groundless."

The statement said the person calling in the report gave a false name of someone who had died three years ago.

In addition to the body recovered on Sunday, the body found on Saturday and those of three men found a few days earlier, have yet to be identified, because the corpses were badly decomposed after so much time in the water. Gabrielli said they have identified the other eight bodies: four French, an Italian, a Hungarian, a German and a Spanish national.

Meanwhile, Italian officials say experts can begin pumping fuel from a capsized cruise ship while divers continue the search for people still missing.

Officials said an oily film was spotted about 300 yards from the Concordia, but it appears to be light oil, not the heavy fuel inside the vessel's tanks.

Admiral Ilarione dell'Anna said Monday that the fuel removal could begin as early as Tuesday.

Gabrielli said that would continue "as long as it is possible to inspect whatever can be inspected."

The decision to carry out both operations in tandem was made after it was determined that the Costa Concordia did not risk falling to a lower seabed.

"The ship is stable," Gabrielli said.?

The pristine sea around Giglio, where the ship with 4,200 people aboard rammed a reef and sliced open its hull on Jan. 13 before turning over on its side, is a prized fishing area and part of a protected area for whales and dolphins.

Investigation continues
Meanwhile, the operators of the Costa Concordia faced questions over their share of the blame for the shipwreck.

The criminal probe into the ship's doomed voyage may be widened, a lawyer for the ship's captain said Monday.

The vice president of Carnival Corp, Howard Frank, arrived in Italy on Sunday to help oversee the situation, according to a source close to the company.

Frank and Pier Luigi Foschi, chairman and chief executive of Costa Cruises, met some of families of the victims of the tragedy on Giglio island on Sunday, the source said.

Costa Cruises has not received any notification that it is being investigated, according to a company spokesman. The company will be forthright with investigators and has full faith in the magistrature, he added.

Captain Francesco Schettino is accused of steering the cruise ship too close to shore while performing a maneuver known as a "salute" in which liners draw up very close to land to make a display.

Schettino, who is charged with multiple manslaughter and with abandoning ship before the evacuation of passengers and crew was complete, has told prosecutors he had been instructed to perform the maneuver by operator Costa Cruises.

Schettino's phone calls with the owner's marine operation director "... have opened further channels for investigation that could reasonably lead to an increase in the number of those under investigation," his lawyer, Bruno Leporatti, said in a statement.

Third parties "could have at least contributed to creating the tragic event," Leporatti said.

Leporatti, told reporters Monday that tests on urine and hair samples showed that his client had not been under the influence of alcohol or drugs before the crash. Prosecutors could not confirm the report, since they cannot speak about the investigation while it is still under way.

Schettino said the fatal maneuver was originally intended to bring the ship half a mile from the shore, "but then we brought it to 0.28" (of a nautical mile), he said.

Investigators have said the actual point of impact was much closer to the shore but establishing the exact sequence of events could be complicated by problems with the recording equipment used to track the ship's progress.

The Costa Concordia ran aground Jan. 13 off the coast of Italy, resulting in the evacuation of thousands of passengers as the ship began heavily listing.

Schettino said the black box on board had been broken for two weeks and he had asked for it to be repaired, in vain.

According to transcripts of his hearing with investigators leaked to Italian newspapers, Schettino told magistrates Costa had insisted on the maneuver to please passengers and attract publicity.

"It was planned, we were supposed to have done it a week earlier but it was not possible because of bad weather," Schettino said, according to the Corriere della Sera daily.

"They insisted. They said: 'We do tourist navigation, we have to be seen, get publicity and greet the island'."

Foschi has previously said that Schettino delayed issuing the SOS and evacuation orders and gave false information to the company headquarters.

"Personally, I think he wasn't honest with us," Foschi told Corriere della Sera Friday. He said the first phone conversation between Schettino and Ferrarini took place 20 minutes after the ship hit the rock.

Foschi, who visited Giglio Sunday, declined to respond to Schettino's latest comments.

SAN SIMEON, California (AP) ? The 1941 film "Citizen Kane" will be shown at Hearst Castle, the elaborate California estate built by the newspaper magnate who inspired Orson Welles' cinema classic.

Hearst sought to derail the movie, which portrayed the rise and fall of an obsessively controlling character, and festival director Wendy Eidson says it has probably never been seen at the estate, which is now a state park.

Pineda-to-Yankees finally official

UPDATE: Montero passed his physical, so it?s now a done deal.

The multi-player deal between the Yankees and Mariners headlined by Jesus Montero and Michael Pineda is moving closer to completion.

Montero was delayed from taking a physical due to weather, plane and visa problems in his native Venezuela, but Larry Stone of the Seattle Times reports that the 22-year-old arrived in the United States yesterday and was en route to Seattle.

The Pacific Northwest was rocked by a pretty nasty winter storm this week, so there?s no guarantee Montero?s travel plans went off without a hitch. However, assuming no problems with his flight and scheduled physical, an official announcement could happen within the next day or two.

The deal between the Yankees and Mariners, which was agreed upon last Friday, will send Montero and right-hander Hector Noesi to Seattle for Pineda and prospect right-hander Jose Campos.

Shawkat is no exception, as MTV News learned while speaking with the erstwhile Maeby Fünke at the Sundance Film Festival, where she's promoting the Carrie Preston-directed comedy "That's What She Said."

Asked about the future of "Arrested Development," Shawkat reacted as any sane actor would: She attempted to flee the scene. But just like Maeby, who could always invent a way out of trouble, Shawkat eventually opted for a different approach: diving into any and all "Arrested" questions head-on.

"They're writing it now, though we haven't seen any scripts yet," the comedian said about the developing "Arrested" status. "But we're all game."

As for what is in Maeby's future, Shawkat could only guess. "She'd be my age [by now]," she said. "She probably wouldn't go to college. She's probably figured out some weird schemes to get money really fast, and she probably has a buzzed head and is dating some French painter."

French painter? What, no love for George Michael?

"Oh, I don't know," she laughed. "Feels kind of creepy. I love [Michael Cera], but the whole first-cousin thing ... "

No matter what comes next, and even in light of Shawkat's initial fight-or-flight reaction, the comedian said she's very much hoping to dive back into the "Arrested" universe after all these years.

"It's been kind of following me around like a very attractive albatross," she said. "But now it's hopefully going to happen. It would be very exciting."

Automotive Parts

Automotive parts are the different components (or spare parts) of an automobile. Every automobile owner will have to shop for automotive parts sooner or later. Contrary to popular belief, automotive parts are not manufactured only by the original manufacturing company (of your automobile) but also by various independent (engineering) companies that specialize in manufacturing and installing automotive parts of a diverse range of automobiles of different makes and models. Automotive parts (manufactured by the original manufacturing company of your automobile) are expensive in most cases. When you factor in the repair or installation charges you will have to pay at the workshop and cost of alternative transport, you would realize that it will make more financial sense to buy your automobile and purchase a new one.

Most car enthusiasts can and do have a certain degree of technical know-how and generic tools that are useful for basic repair work.

If you have undertaken thorough research and explored all the options before purchasing the automotive parts, you would probably have purchased them at a reasonable price. A large number of car enthusiasts save hundreds of dollars just because they have technical know-how and generic tools that allow them to do basic repair work and installation of their vehicles at home. Availability of automotive parts was a huge constraint some time back. Automobile owners could buy second hand parts from their repair workshop or order them from the original manufacturing company of their automobile.

Experts recommend investing in original equipment manufacturer automotive parts despite the fact that they are more expensive because they are superior in quality, more reliable and are made for the specific make and model of your automobile.

On the other hand, aftermarket parts are manufactured for your car by companies other than the original manufacturer and are designed (generically) for several (makes and models of) cars. The performance of aftermarket parts is unreliable at best. Moreover, because they are manufactured by relatively smaller (and unknown companies) there are no guarantees for aftermarket parts available in the market. Thus, do not be lured by the substantially lower price of aftermarket parts because chances are that they would make you spend more in the long run than original equipment manufacturer parts! It should also be kept in mind that original equipment manufacturer parts are not necessarily manufactured by your automobile?s manufacturing company but one or more other companies that have been authorized to manufacture these parts by your automobile?s manufacturing company.

Federal prosecutors shut down Megaupload file-sharing site, founders charged

Details are still somewhat light at the moment, but reports are now coming out that the popular Megaupload file-sharing site has been shut down by Federal prosecutors in the US, and that the site's founders and other individuals have been charged with violating piracy laws. According to The New York Times, the indictment says that the company has cost copyright holders some $500 million in lost revenue, and that the site was at one time the 13th most popular on the internet. As the Times also notes, this news comes a day after Megaupload voluntarily blacked out its website to protest the SOPA and PIPA anti-piracy legislation now being considered by Congress.

Update: As The Verge reports, the indictment itself doesn't mince any words, calling Megaupload an "international organized criminal enterprise allegedly responsible for massive worldwide online piracy," and alleging that Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom et al generated more than $175 million in "criminal proceeds." Those charges also come with some potentially hefty prison sentences, including a maximum 20 years for conspiracy to commit racketeering, five years for copyright infringement, 20 years for money laundering, and five years for each of the substantive charges of criminal copyright infringement.
