PFT: Tebow's throwing motion has improved

Plaxico BurressAP

Training camps are open and free agent receiver Plaxico Burress remains unsigned, and Burress is baffled by that.

Burress told ESPN?s Adam Schefter that he expected to have contract offers as soon as free agency started, and he assumed that in late July he?d be in camp with some NFL team.

?No doubt about it,? Burress said. ?With some of the things I was able to do after being away for two years, I pretty much thought it spoke for itself. But I guess obviously not.?

Burress caught 45 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns last season, and he said he?s in much better shape now than he was a year ago. And yet no team seems to have any particular interest in adding Burress to its roster. That may be a result of concerns that Burress is more trouble than he?s worth in a locker room, but Burress said any perception that he?s not a good teammate is false.

?For anybody to say I was a problem in the locker room or anything like that is totally a lie,? Burress said. ?All I did was come out, was a great teammate, tried to play the best football that I could play.?

Age is surely a factor in teams turning away from Burress. He?ll turn 35 in two weeks and isn?t as fast as he was when he was younger. In fact, Burress was already showing signs of slowing down even before he accidentally shot himself in the leg in 2008, ending his tenure with the Giants and landing him in prison for two years: Burress?s average yards per catch had declined for four consecutive seasons prior to his prison sentence.

But Burress says he doesn?t know why he?s not getting a chance.

?Some things you don?t have an answer to, but to me it?s just a matter of keep working hard, keep training, and keep building myself up to get back to the player I know I can be,? Burress said.

Burress may know he can be a productive NFL wide receiver, but 32 NFL general managers remain unconvinced.

Granada Hills Charter High's Academic Decathlon team meets with Washington leaders

Members of Granada Hills Charter High's national-champion Academic Decathlon Team pose in front of the U.S. Capitol during their visit to Washington, D.C.

Granada Hill Charter High School's nine-member Academic Decathlon team is in Washington, D.C., taking a victory lap of sorts as a reward for winning its second national championship earlier this year.

Team members met this week with Education Secretary Arne Duncan and also have meetings scheduled with Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, who represent California in the U.S. Senate.

Granada Hills dominated the national competition, held in late April in Albuquerque, scoring the highest point tally in the decathlon's history. That score - 54,081 points out of a possible 60,000 - broke the previous record of 53,119 set by Ventura County's Moorpark High School in 2008.

Google Street View puts five national parks at click of a mouse

FRESNO, Calif.???Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the blue sky stretches up from the horizon.

Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road, where, in the east, iconic Half Dome suddenly appears against a backdrop of the snow-capped High Sierra.

The Google Street View service that has brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it ? as well criticism that some scenes along its 5 million miles of the globe's roadways invade privacy ? this month has turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California.

"Everyone likes to take a road trip through a national park," said Evan Rapoport, the Street View project manager. "Bringing unique places to people that they might not go in the real world is unique to Street View."

The company sought permission from the Department of the Interior before filming in May as drivers hit the road in vehicles rigged with 15-lens cameras that point in all directions, Rapoport said. The camera fires off still images at intervals depending upon the speed of the vehicle, then custom software blurs faces and stitches all of them together into an ever-advancing 360-degree panorama.

Click right and see orange-hued boulders formed from cooling magma. Click up and squint into that fireball of a sun hovering over the southeast California desert in Joshua Tree National Park, which is featured with the others along with the forest-dense Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Redwood National Park at Crescent City near the Oregon border.

Stop in the middle of the virtual road and do a 360 without worrying about being rear-ended by a ubiquitous RV.

The project was part of a Street View "refresh" of California that involved a trip down Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, including the Bixby Creek Bridge that spans the mouth of a coast-hugging canyon.

Is it part of a master plan to capture people in a virtual world? "I sure hope not," Raporport said. "Part of our goal is to inspire people to see these places in person."

As national park attendance continues to decline, officials welcome this unique virtual visit as a way to keep fans connected and inspire others to experience the sights in person.

"I often wish we could get the word out on some of the park system's lesser-known wonders," said Candace Tinkler, chief interpreter at Redwoods, with its massive trees that can live 2,000 years and soar up to 350 feet. "This is a wonderful opportunity for people around the world to connect to these places."

The parks join other Street View features like a snowy glide down one of the ski runs at Squaw Valley of 1960 Olympics fame, or a walk around the gardens of the Louvre museum in Paris. Rapoport would not say whether other U.S. national parks are being considered.

Joe Zarki, a park ranger at Joshua Tree, said the virtual drive could be used to show tourists at the 1,200-square-mile park's visitors centers that the flat expanse of desert changes to a landscape of boulders and the namesake towering yuccas within an hour's drive.

"We're often the forgotten big park," said spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman, of the park that is the largest in the lower 48. "I think it will make people want to come to the park. It's a cool place, but it is remote. When they see those photos and the crystal clear blue skies they're going to want to come here."

Next-generation sequencing provides key in finding gene

(SALT LAKE CITY)Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a rare disorder that usually begins in infancy, with intermittent episodes of paralysis and stiffness, first affecting one side of the body, then the other. Symptoms mysteriously appear and disappear, again and again, and affected children often experience dozens of episodes per week. As they get older, children fall progressively behind their peers in both intellectual abilities and motor skills, and more than half develop epilepsy. Unfortunately, medications that work for epilepsy have been unsuccessful in controlling the recurrent attacks of paralysis, leaving parents and physicians with few options, and significantly disabling those affected.

Researchers at the University of Utah Departments of Neurology and Human Genetics, in collaboration with researchers at Duke University Medical Center, have discovered that mutations in the ATP1A3 gene cause the disease in the majority of patients with a diagnosis of AHC. The study was published online on Sunday, July 29, 2012, in Nature Genetics.

In a collaborative effort with the AHC Foundation, Kathryn J. Swoboda, M.D., co-first author on the study, associate professor of neurology and pediatrics, and director of the Pediatric Motor Disorders Research Program at the University of Utah, established an international database of patients with AHC from around the world, starting with a single family nearly 14 years ago. This database now includes 200 affected individuals from more than a dozen countries. Access to clinical information and DNA samples from this database were critical to the success of the international collaboration that helped to identify the first gene causing AHC in a significant percentage of patients.

"AHC is almost always a sporadic disease, which means that there is no family history of the disorder," says Tara Newcomb, genetic counselor, University of Utah Department of Neurology, and a co-author of the study. "The rarity of the disease and the almost exclusively sporadic inheritance made AHC an ideal candidate for next-generation sequencing."

The mysterious and intermittent nature of the neurologic symptoms, which range from unusual eye movements to seizure-like episodes, to partial and/or full body paralysis often results in a prolonged diagnostic odyssey for parents and children, according to Matthew Sweney, M.D., an instructor in the U of U Departments of Neurology and Pediatrics and an epilepsy specialist at Primary Children's Medical Center. "Families often present again and again to the emergency room, and children may undergo dozens of tests and invasive procedures," says Sweney, also a study co-author. "Often, it is only after the spells fail to respond to antiepileptic medications that the diagnosis is considered."

The ATP1A3 gene encodes one piece of a key transporter molecule that normally would move sodium and potassium ions across a channel between neurons (nerve cells) to regulate brain activity. Mutations in this gene are already known to cause another rare movement disorder, rapid onset dystonia parkinsonism, and clinical testing for mutations in this gene is readily available through a blood test. "Having a means to confirm a diagnosis more quickly, using a simple blood test, will allow us to better care for our patients and provide them opportunities for early enrollment in clinical trials," Swoboda says. "The identification of the gene provides scientists with the opportunity to identify specifically targeted and truly effective therapies."

In a broad international collaborative effort, the initial collaboration between the University of Utah and Duke investigators expanded to involve more than three dozen researchers from 13 countries. "This discovery is a testament to the power of the next-generation sequencing technologies, which are becoming increasingly available as a result of the Human Genome Project," says co-author Lynn Jorde, Ph.D., professor and chair of the U of U Department of Human Genetics. "These technologies are rapidly revolutionizing our ability to diagnose rare disorders, and provide hope for hundreds of families of children with rare disorders about which little is known and no targeted treatments currently exist."

###

Funding for the work at the University of Utah was provided by a grant from the Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood Foundation (AHCkids.org). The Utah team also included former postdoctoral fellow Chad Huff, Ph.D., from the Department of Human Genetics, and Louis Viollet, M.D., Ph.D., and Sandra Reyna, M.D., from the Department of Neurology Pediatric Motor Disorders Research Program (https://medicine.utah.edu/neurology/research/swoboda).

Whole genome sequencing was performed in collaboration with the Institute for Systems Biology.

Rip Out and Re-Build - about Home Improvement

Posted on July 28, 2012

There are many ways we can improve our homes, both with regards to the property value and how comfortable and happy you are with it. There are small improvements such as redecorating which can breathe a breath of fresh air to your surroundings but there are other home improvements that can have a greater effect on your home.

Larger home improvements include getting extensions or conservatories built and kitchen or bathrooms refitting. These improvements may fix problems with the home such as a dividing wall that you feel is making your rooms feel cramped. Getting major restructuring and renovations done can modernise and customise your home to your tastes but added work like this can also add some serious figures onto your property value.

The main draw for getting new kitchens or new bathrooms has been the customisation you can exact on the designs, adding appliances or features that you've always wanted or need. Kitchens are one aspect that has plenty of potential and scope for new ideas such as built in appliances, wine coolers, soft closing cupboards and drawers and chef styled cookers.

Bathrooms are similar, there are many modern baths, sinks and shower setups that have become very popular, one quirky addition to some bathrooms is a steam room which people have had fitted in their showers there are even bathrooms that have been converted to become wet rooms.

These two types of home improvements can be designed so that they all go together or follow the same style. In most cases you will only need to hire a designer and they can handle all of the details for you. They can present you with design ideas they may have and you can select or customise them yourself.

Building an extension or a conservatory can be a similarly large project, planning permission is required if you want to extend your property as in some cases you may not be permitted to extend such as being too close to a road. There is a certain percentage of your property's overall size that you can extend without needing planning permission from your local council although this may have already been used up by previous work completed.

With all the workers and fitters on the market you may need to keep a track of which ones are reliable and up to the task, you can do this by checking any customer reviews or finding out who had done the work at a friend or family member's home. They'll be able to recommend or warn you about any fitters that have done work for them and you're going to get an honest answer.

Parenting Tips ? You Evidently Do Not Understand ... - My Life Coach

When you?re a parent of a baby, a stroller is something that you need but how do you pick out which one is the best? Today, many types of baby strollers are made and you can find lightweight ones, tandem units for twins or travel systems that work with car seats. One stroller does not fit all?you need to find the one that is the best for your individual needs and familial situation. We are going to explore some of the different options that are out there both in terms of individual strollers and features that make them good or bad fits.

If weight is a concern, the Kolcraft Contours Lite Stroller is definitely worth looking into. The large single wheels give the stroller an attractive design, and also make it easier to navigate and turn. You are going to see that the Kolcraft Contours stroller is built to be operational on a variety of surfaces and is easy to steer around obstacles that might be in your way. There is a five point harness and a multi position reclining seat that will help keep your baby very safe and very comfortable. If you want a stroller that keeps your baby safe and comfortable while still being easy for you to navigate and operate while still being lightweight, this is the best option. What?s notable about the Baby Jogger 2011 City Select Single Stroller is that you?re not stuck with keeping it as it is when you buy it. You may not need exactly the same stroller a year from now that you need right now. If you ever require another seat for your next child, this stroller is designed for this option. You can rearrange the seating in the Baby Jogger stroller in more than a dozen ways, so you can be sure that your child will be comfortable. This stroller has a hand operated parking brake which is an efficient safety feature you?ll appreciate. If you?re looking for a well designed and customizable stroller, the Baby Jogger might be your best choice.

When you are shopping for a stroller, you need to figure out if you want a stroller that stands alone or is part of a travel system. Travel systems are convenient for parents who drive frequently, as many people in the suburbs do. You just transfer the baby?s car seat right into the stroller without having to disturb your baby.

If you don?t drive every day, however, this type of system might not be necessary and you may want to get a stand alone stroller. Jogging and running strollers are another option to consider. These are strollers that are safe to take jogging or running. They have three large tires, so the unit is like a large tricycle that can keep your baby comfortable as you jog. Analysis: Internet stock collapse dents Silicon Valley

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Social media companies, once hailed by their Silicon Valley boosters as world-changing businesses with limitless potential, are instead proving a sobering reminder of how investors can be seduced by Internet hype.

With few exceptions, the first wave of social media firms to trade on the public markets has delivered a disastrous performance that conjures memories of the dot-com bust of 2000.

"Farmville" publisher Zynga, which went public in December at a valuation of $7 billion, is trading around $3.15 a share, more than 68 percent off its $10 IPO price.

Daily deals site Groupon, touted as the firm that could reinvent local commerce, has fallen from its $20 IPO price to about $7.15 in nearly nine months. Music service Pandora Media has dropped from $16 at its June 2011 IPO to around $9.50 on Friday.

And on Thursday, the 800-pound gorilla of the group, Facebook Inc, reported tepid results that shaved some $10 billion off the company's market cap. The stock has gone straight down since its botched May initial public offering and now trades at around one-third off its $38 IPO price.

"The VCs, the private equity guys at the early stages, already cashed out and made their fortunes," said Peter Schiff, chief executive of Euro Pacific Capital. "Everybody else who ran to buy the stock at the IPO at a sky-high valuation ended up holding the bag."

"A lot of these companies are going to make a quick buck and flame out," he added. "Just look at 10 years ago."

It's true that a few companies with more of a business focus -- notably LinkedIn -- have done much better. The jobs-networking site is trading at $100.82, well above its $45 IPO price from May 2011. Yelp Inc, the local reviews company, is holding above its $15 IPO price from March.

Startups in areas like data analytics and business software, such as Splunk Inc have also fared well.

But the wipe-out among consumer-oriented social media companies has raised concerns the entire sector is fad-driven. While the public companies are profitable and showing strong growth -- unlike the class of 1999 and 2000 -- it is not clear how sustainable that is.

"People just can't figure out how these companies are going to make money and justify these huge valuations," said Michael Yoshikami, founder of Destination Wealth Management.

The euphoria around Internet stocks, Yoshikami added, has faded. "It's different from six months ago," he said.

In Silicon Valley, venture capitalists fear the high-profile stock busts will take a toll on the next wave of companies trying to go public. To some extent, they say, they already have.

"It's going to have a chilling, sobering effect," said Tim Chang, managing partner at Mayfield Fund. "It's especially hard to make the argument of why a company should be valued at $1 billion or more."

MAKING GOOD

On Thursday, Facebook reported its first quarterly revenues of $1.18 billion, up 32 percent. But executives warned a quickening shift to its underperforming mobile app was eating into results, and user and revenue growth slowed for the fifth consecutive quarter. The stock was down 9 percent in afternoon trading on Friday.

It has not helped pacify Wall Street that the tech firms' venture capital backers on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, California, have enjoyed big paydays via IPOs. In the case of Facebook, Accel Partners sold 49 million shares at $38 apiece, reaping enormous profits.

Insiders have sold large chunks of their holdings in Zynga and Groupon, though the top executives still maintain enormous stakes in their companies. Zynga CEO Mark Pincus and other insiders netted some $500 million when they sold a portion of their stock in April at $12 a share.

Others were less fortunate. T. Rowe Price lost $61.4 million in its Facebook and Zynga holdings over two days. Fidelity, the largest U.S. fund, saw $126 million of its on-paper holdings evaporate over the past two days.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who owns just north of half a billion shares, took his lumps as well, as more than $3 billion of his paper-weath evaporated Thursday.

'DOESN'T JIVE'

Zynga's stock went into free-fall after it slashed its 2012 outlook from 23 to 29 cents to 4 to 9 cents, blaming weakness in existing Facebook games and a delay in its pipeline.

The results widely missed expectations set by company management at the end of last quarter, when Chief Operating Officer John Schappert said the company was "excited and comfortable raising guidance for the year."

On a conference call, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield took Zynga executives to task for not warning investors. Chief Financial Officer Dave Wehner said it was company policy to only give guidance once a quarter.

But the earnings report "doesn't jive" with executives' recently upbeat comments, Greenfield later told Reuters. A handful of plaintiffs' lawyers announced Thursday they had begun investigating Zynga for breach of fiduciary duty.

Meanwhile, Facebook's executives took a conservative approach on Thursday, declining to offer their own forward-looking predictions.

In light of Zynga's bad miss, Wall Street analysts said that the lack of forecasts sapped investor confidence.

"The entire social media space may seem like a disaster, but it's perhaps that public markets have yet to see the right stocks. Firms like Groupon, Facebook, and Zynga require very aggressive user acquisition and the Average Revenue Per User is much lower," said Steve Place, a founder of options analytics firm investingwithoptions.com.

"However, if we look into different verticals of the social media space there are some decent ideas."

He cited real-estate site Zillow Inc, now almost double its IPO price.

But on Sand Hill Road, the mood these days is decidedly more subdued, a focus on returning to fundamental value.

"We'll see more discipline on private investments," with more focus on the sustainability of any competitive advantage a company has, said Roelof Botha, a partner at Sequoia Capital.

"There are private companies that we are investors in that have underlying defensibility and business models for which you do want to stretch on valuation," Botha added.

At Bay Partners in Palo Alto, partners have already noticed a certain dialing-back of the swagger with which some entrepreneurs walk into their office.

"I feel a little bit of humility, a little bit of reality creep in," said partner Salil Deshpande, whose investments include Buddy Media, which was sold to Salesforce.com for $689 million earlier this year. Early-stage entrepreneurs who a few months ago might have argued their nascent companies were worth $5 million might today accept a valuation of $1 million, he said.

Mayfield's Chang expects a hit to companies with what he calls "lumpy" business models -- less predictable, consumer-oriented businesses that rely on advertising and virtual goods, like Facebook and Zynga. Those businesses, he says, are reliant on their popularity with the public, a fickle group.

"The scariest is easy-come, easy-go revenue, kind of like Groupon," he said. "It can ramp up quick, but disappear quickly too."

Genome of a fruit besieged

The banana genome has been unpeeled. The genetic makeup of Musa acuminata, a fertile banana species that gave rise to the seedless Cavendish and other clonal varieties people eat today, sheds light on the plant?s evolutionary history and ripening process. This information may also help researchers boost the crop?s resistance to fungal and viral pathogens threatening its survival. M. acuminata has 36,542 protein-encoding genes and 235 genes that make small snippets of protein-regulating RNA, called microRNAs, an international team of researchers reports online July 11 in Nature. The team also found the genetic remains of a pathogen called the banana streak virus scattered on 10 of the banana?s 11 chromosomes. ?It?s probably a footprint of an attack that was successful, but the banana somehow overcame it,? says Thomas Givnish, a plant ecologist and evolutionary biologist at the University of Wisconsin?Madison.

Study finds novel therapy that may prevent damage ... - Health Centers

? Diabetes ? ? Eye / Vision Problems ? Jul 28, 2012

Researchers at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center have identified a compound that could interrupt the chain of events that cause damage to the retina in diabetic retinopathy. The finding is significant because it could lead to a novel therapy that targets two mechanisms at the root of the disease: inflammation and the weakening of the blood barrier that protects the retina.

To date, treatments for diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness among working-age Americans, have been aimed largely at one of those mechanisms.

In diabetic retinopathy, damage to the retina results, in part, from the activity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein that weakens the protective blood-retinal barrier. Recent drugs targeting VEGF have exhibited good response for nearly half of the patients with diabetic retinopathy. But researchers believe that there is also an inflammatory component that may contribute to the disease process.

The study, published in the Biochemical Journal, June 2012 [epub ahead of print] identifies a specific protein common to both pathways as an important target in regulating the disease process in which blood vessels become leaky, and provides a drug that may be developed into a therapeutic intervention for patients in which anti-VEGF treatment alone is not sufficient.

"In diabetic retinopathy and a host of other retinal diseases, increases in VEGF and inflammatory factors ? some of the same factors that contribute to the response to an infection ? cause blood vessels in the eye to leak which, in turn, results in a buildup of fluid in the neural tissue of the retina,? says David A. Antonetti, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Molecular and Integrative Physiology, who has also been awarded a Jules and Doris Stein Professorship from Research to Prevent Blindness. ?This insidious form of modified inflammation can eventually lead to blindness.?

The compound targets atypical protein kinase C (aPKC), required for VEGF to make blood vessels leak. Moreover, Antonetti?s laboratory has demonstrated that the compound is effective at blocking damage from tumor necrosis factor also elevated in diabetic retinopathy that comprises part of the inflammation. Benefits of this compound could extend to therapies for uveitis, or changes to the brain blood vessels in the presence of brain tumors or stroke.

?This is a great leap forward,? says Antonetti. ?We?ve identified an important target in regulating blood vessel leakage in the eye and we have a therapy that works in animal models. Our research is in the early stages of development. We still have a long way to go to demonstrate effectiveness of this compound in humans to create a new therapy but the results are very promising.?

Backlog of deportation cases expands despite review period | Los ...

Even with recent provisions and policies that promote prosecutorial discretion and leniency for illegal immigrants, the number of deportation cases entering backlog is surpassing the number of cases that are being closed or dismissed.

That will come as a bit of surprise to many Los Angeles residents after the city's immigration courts recently completed a two-week hiatus to review their deportation casework. According to public records, the city closed 707 deportation cases; the most for any city in America during these review periods.

All told, 7,180 deportation cases were closed after the reviews covered roughly 300,000 cases; a massive step for federal and immigration officials, but an even greater one for the individuals who were spared unnecessary and costly deportation proceedings. As is the point of prosecutorial discretion, the cases against these individuals are being dismissed so that immigration enforcement can focus on high-profile individuals with criminal records.

Still, about 111,000 new immigration cases were filed during these reviews, absolutely dwarfing the number of closed cases. This means the swelling effect on the backlog of immigration cases continues, even with these programs and provisions trying to combat the issue.

So what happens to the people who had their cases closed by the review process? No further legal action is to be taken against them -- at least for the past transgression that landed them in trouble. They are not eligible for a visa, but they can obtain a work permit.

Work permits can be difficult to secure and the application process can be very confusing for first-time applicants, so it can very beneficial to discuss your desire for a work permit with an experienced immigration attorney. Such legal representation can advise you on the ins and outs of the application process, helping alleviate your fears about obtaining a work permit.

The cruel strength that Kisin wields is one they do not understand and cannot ignore.Following his directions they embark on a dangerous journey.

The novel ?Elanclose? presents us with a world of re-growth after vegetation has been destroyed and all animals wiped out.We are presented with the fact that things do not stay the same.Often in times of duress adaptation takes place to create something stronger.A more durable plant grows; trees that are stronger and more resilient. This also applies to the children, they have learned without guidance from adults on how to live, build and plan. The clans have developed their own laws, follow their own logic, but when they are all drawn together they find their ideas are not the same, nor are their rules.

The author?s characters develop in subtle but definite ways. The reader becomes aware of their advancing maturity and education as they lose their naivety.Their experiences mold them, producing the good and bad within them. The author plays with situations and her character?s responses; in doing so she whisks the reader away and skillfully places them in the character?s place to experience the emotional turmoil they must overcome. As the characters show integrity and strength in exciting and moving incidents, the reader becomes entangled in their sensations and emotions, eventually becoming happily exhausted by the sweeping events they are pulled into.

Krystyna lives in rural Ontario where she practices organic farming.Moving from the city she enjoyed the learning curve from being a white collar worker to a worker of the land. The experience encouraged her to write about the events and also create the post-apocalyptic novel ?Elanclose?.Krystyna says ?I felt the values of the land, nature and the balance of things were being lost.By starting from a new beginning I was able to make an imaginary world that realized the significance of the natural elements and their importance but as with the real world a utopia is short lived, and the fight to keep it is always on going.?Krystyna has published books and articles in North America and internationally; she is presently working on her follow up to ?Elanclose? with her sequel ?Aqueous Passage?.

like one should spend dollars and not save them but why silver and gold in particular over other material assets?

Well when SHTF does happen and America becomes a third world country for several decades (I don't understand why people just assume we are going to recover in the matter of days, I think it'll be several years) your going to have spend all your gold and silver because all your currency will be worthless. Once your gold and silver dries up and you lost your job that you will probably never reclaim for some time, what are you going to do?

I think perhaps investing in land might be the best idea and start farming. One thing that people will always need, when nobody has jobs, when their currencies are worthless and it costs a thousand dollars to buy a loaf of bread is food. I think one should invest in production assets that allow you to produce things that people will need no matter in what condition the economy is in. If I buy 1000 oz of silver, when shtf i'll still have 1000 oz of silver and no production method to produce more and will eventually have to spend it because i'll have no job to buy food and will most likely not have the ability to buy more silver and gold because i'll have no job and will be to worried about buying other things like food, oil, toilet paper, things that I actually need and will most likely not have money just sitting around to invest in.

yay food

I think investing in production assets is the best way to go so that way I can get a real return on my investment. If I bought a cow and it had a baby I would get a real return (another cow) whose value could go up and down based off of how much our currency is actually worth, but at the end of the day I have another cow no matter what, and a way to produce more if I needed to spend it.

I think simply stockpile up on food is a bad idea as food eventually goes bad, and one should invest in ways to produce food.

why gold and silver and not TP?

its just the way they did it from the begging of time... before TP was even invented.

our ancestors went to gold and silver for not just its MONETARY purpose. it was used in building many things back then as well: temples, silverware, cups, vases, armor, jewelry....

at the time there was NOTHING ELSE....

gold and silver have just recently become COMMODITIES, in terms of what they are TODAY. back THEN, 200-2000+ years ago, it was THE standard of wealth and trade.

before that you did use things such as fur skins, weapons, etc.. the indians...

the way things are looking I wouldnt be surprised if the US GOV went to TP as a form of currency...

If you go back and read many of the archived posts, many of us have said all along that survival hoarding should be first! You need a supply of food(many of the freeze-dried kinds have a 20-25 year shelf-life)no debt, water, firearms and ammo and whatever you need to survive,THEN look at precious metals as a way to preserve your wealth against the currency collapse. PM's are a strategy for having something coming out the other side of a collapse. Some folks are pouring all of their extra cash into PMs without taking care of the"survival" needs. Personally,I have no debt,an 18 month supply of food,4 guns with ammo(I probably need more ammo than I have)for protection and for food acquisition. I even have a hoard of toilet paper. I will keep a small amount of cash on hand for essentials AND 11 ozs. of gold and 160 ozs. of silver. So,I agree with your premise, gold and silver will probably not be all that useful in a currency collapse, but it will make your life a whole lot better when a new economy is established.

The thing most people miss when talking about gold and silver when considering it against inflation/collapse/etc is;

You cannot value it in dollars!

Value it in any other commodity that has value regardless of the "dollar amount" slapped on to it.

Man hours worked
ounces of gold/silver
Gallons of milk
Population

Dollar values only tie together relative worth of two goods/services, so things that are traded in dollars should be compared with their dollar value stripped.

If a gallon of milk costs me $3.50
And an ounce of gold costs me $1,650
The value ratio is 471:1

If milk goes up to $6.50
and gold only increases just a bit to $1,700
the value ratio changes to 261:1

Even though gold went up in "price" it went down in value against Milk.

How about against population? This is one of my favorites.

Currently, there is roughly 7.02B people on the planet. Lets say there is 30,623 tonnes of gold above ground (taken from wikipedia)

In ounces that's around 984,552,305 ozt, or a ratio of 7.13/ozt Au : 1 person

Let say over the next 10 years we add 700M people, and 200M ounces troy of gold.

Now we are at a ratio of 6.5/ozt Au : 1 Person.

The value of gold just went up against the population. Doesn't matter what gold did in dollars.

This is all my opinions/thought's, please don't take it as 100% fact, confirm things for yourself, make your own investments.

For though, I'll be holding for quite some time.
