WASHINGTON U.-ST.LOUIS (US) ? Military service, even without combat, has a lingering effect on personality, and may make veterans less agreeable.

It?s no secret that battlefield trauma can leave veterans with deep emotional scars that impact their ability to function in civilian life. New research from Washington University in St. Louis suggests that this effect could potentially make it more difficult for veterans to get along with friends, family, and co-workers.

Published in the journal Psychological Science, the study of young German men found that those who have experienced military service tend to score lower than civilian counterparts on measures of agreeableness?a dimension of personality that influences our ability to be pleasant and accommodating in social situations.

?Our results suggest that personality traits play an important role in military training, both in the sort of men who are attracted to the military in the first place, and in the lasting impact that this service has on an individual?s outlook on life,? says lead author Joshua J. Jackson, assistant professor of psychology.

The study confirms that the military attracts men who are generally less neurotic, less likely to worry, and less likely to be concerned about seeking out novel experiences. When compared with men in civilian pursuits, those entering the military also are more aggressive, more interested in competition than cooperation, and less concerned about the feelings of others, the study finds.

?Military recruits are a little less warm and friendly to begin with and the military experience seems to reinforce this?as after service, men score even lower on agreeableness when compared to individuals who did not go into the military,? Jackson says.

?Interestingly, this influence appears to linger long after the soldier has re-entered the workforce or returned to college.?

Career success

Jackson points out that being less agreeable is not always a negative human trait. While it may make it more challenging to maintain positive relationships with friends and romantic partners, it can be seen as a positive influence on career success.

?On the flip side,? he says, ?people with lower levels of agreeableness are often more likely to fight their way up the corporate ladder and to make the sometimes unpopular decisions that can be necessary for business success.?

Either way, this study offers evidence that experiences in basic training and other military service do shape the way people approach the world.

?These changes in personality appear to be small, but they could make a big difference in the lives of those who have served in the military,? he says.

Jackson?s research is based on a six-year study that tracked the personality traits of a group of young men in German high schools who chose to meet mandatory public service requirements through either military or civilian service.

Co-authored with investigators at the University of T?bingen in Germany, the study is among the first to empirically test whether a particular life experience can truly change an individual?s personality, something that many psychologists have long considered to be unlikely.

Perfect laboratory

As Jackson explains, psychologists generally view personality as one of the most stable and difficult-to-change human traits. While some studies have tracked small changes in personality over time, such as changes related to the aging process, there is little research on why these changes occur, or on what sorts of life experiences might contribute to the changes.

Jackson?s research team saw the military as the perfect laboratory in which to test for personality-changing life experiences.

?The whole military experience is sold as an opportunity for a life-changing transformation,? Jackson says. ?Recruiting materials of military forces around the world bolster the idea of military experience as being a catalyst for change. For example, recent slogans in the United States, such as ?Be all you can be,? ?Accelerate your life,? and ?Aim high,? all imply that military experiences affect life trajectories.

?It?s one of the few situations in life where an individual?s daily actions and expectations are completely controlled by someone else. Where, from the moment you wake up in the morning until you go to bed at night, someone is actively working to break down anything that?s individual about you and to build up something else in its place.?

Researchers tested the men?s personalities during high school and re-tested them three times in the six years following either civilian or military service. Not surprisingly, all of the participants scored higher on measures indicative of maturity, such as increased conscientiousness and less neuroticism.

And while the military group did show some increases in measures of agreeableness, the change was much lower than that measured for participants in the civilian service group.

?While the military often promises to ?make a man out of you,? our analysis suggests that much of the advertised post-military increase in maturity can be attributed to normal changes that most young men experience during this stage of their lives,? Jackson says.

?And while military service doesn?t seem to have much impact on other personality traits, such as levels of anxiety or gregariousness, it appears to have a small but significant influence on measures of agreeableness.?

Jackson?s findings may offer a new explanation for why military service members tend to differ from civilians in their rates of divorce, longevity, salaries, and health issues.

?Often these differences are interpreted in terms of the social opportunities that either exist or don?t exist for military members, but rarely is it suggested that military experience changes something about the person, which then influences these outcomes,? Jackson says.

?It?s not a cut-and-dried issue, but this study shows that changes in personality may be one reason that military service is associated with different rates of important life outcomes, like divorce or occupational attainment.?

Alaska takes biggest step yet toward health insurance exchange ...

Juneau, AK, United States (KaiserHealth) ? Alaska has opposed the federal health law so adamantly that it is the only state that chose not to even apply for a $1 million grant the federal government was passing out to states to plan a health insurance exchange. But that doesn?t necessarily mean there won?t be an online marketplace to buy insurance in Alaska.

Last month, the administration of Gov. Sean Parnell, a Republican, hired Public Consulting Group to study the state?s options for setting up an exchange. The state is spending $200,000 on the contract with the Boston-based firm.

The state-based exchanges will allow consumers to easily find and compare health insurance plans online. The Affordable Care Act establishes the exchanges as one-stop shopping for individuals and small businesses to buy insurance and to qualify for subsidies or Medicaid.

Josh Applebee, Alaska?s deputy director for health care policy, described the reasoning for hiring the consultant.

?The biggest problem, I think, is we don?t have enough information to decide,? Applebee said. ?Are we going to do a state exchange? Are we going to do a partnership with the federal government? Are we going to let the federal government run the exchange themselves? If we do the state exchange, what does it look like? What kind of form is it going to take? How much is it going to cost? All of these questions need to be answered.?

States have until Jan. 1, 2013, to submit their exchange plans to the federal government for certification; if a given state doesn?t do so, the feds can set up the exchange for that state. The exchanges are supposed to be working by Jan. 1, 2014.

In addition to Alaska, Public Consulting Group is advising 13 other states on how to implement an exchange. Applebee says the state will benefit from that experience, but the company will also have to take Alaska?s unique characteristics into account.

?Certainly we deliver health care [over greater distances] than any other state and in different ways than any other state,? Applebee said. ?So they can bring they?re experience with them, but they also need to apply that to whatever happens here in the state.?

A few states?including Massachusetts and Utah?have exchanges in place and more than a dozen have made significant progress. Applebee says Alaska is benefiting from taking a slow approach: ?We?re learning from other state?s mistakes and we?re taking advantage of other state?s successes. And I think that?s an advantage we have in our timeline.?

Meanwhile, state Sen. Hollis French, a Democrat from Anchorage, is hoping to convince other lawmakers to pass his bill establishing an exchange. ?Once you realize you?re going to get an exchange imposed upon you from Washington, it only makes sense to try to create one that works for Alaskans,? French said.

Despite the fact that they are both moving in the same direction, Parnell does not support French?s bill, and French does not support the administration?s work.

?I think the governor is making a mistake by circumventing the legislature and going without our input,? French said.

It?s unclear how much support French has among his colleagues in the legislature. He expects to bring his bill to the Senate floor for a vote soon.

Sen. Cathy Giessel, a Republican from Anchorage, said she will not vote for it. She agrees with the administration?s approach studying exchange options. Asked to speculate on how the bill will fare, she says the focus right now in Juneau is on just one thing: oil taxes. ?It?s really sucking the air out of the room, so I don?t know what chance this has of actually getting all the way through the process,? Giessel said.

But French is optimistic. He says other aspects of the Affordable Care Act are controversial, but the health care exchange is not.

?This is really about just trying to find an affordable insurance policy for the citizens of the state, and most people can agree that?s a good thing,? French said. ?They may disagree about how you get there, but it?s a pretty rare person who doesn?t want to see more people covered by insurance.?

The Parnell administration expects the consultant?s study and recommendations to be ready by the end of March or early April. That is just in time for oral arguments in the Supreme Court case against the Affordable Care Act. The high court is expected to rule in June, and Applebee says the state of Alaska will be waiting for that ruling. ?We?ll know at that point how to proceed,? he said.

Dust from industrial-scale processing of nanomaterials carries high explosion risk

ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2012) ? With expanded industrial-scale production of nanomaterials fast approaching, scientists are reporting indications that dust generated during processing of nanomaterials may explode more easily than dust from wheat flour, cornstarch and most other common dust explosion hazards.

Their article in ACS' journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research indicates that nanomaterial dust could explode due to a spark with only 1/30th the energy needed to ignite sugar dust -- the cause of the 2008 Portwentworth, Georgia, explosion that killed 13 people, injured 42 people and destroyed a factory.

Paul Amyotte and colleagues explain that dust explosions are among the earliest recorded causes of industrial accidents -- dating back to a 1785 flour warehouse disaster -- and are still a constant threat at facilities that process fine particles of various materials. Despite significant research, there is still much for scientists to learn about the risks of dust explosions in industry, especially of so-called "nontraditional" dusts (such as those made of nanomaterials), and a constant threat exists. That's why the researchers decided to probe the explosibility of three types of nontraditional dusts: nanomaterials; flocculent (fibrous or fuzzy) materials used in various products, such as floor coverings; and hybrid mixtures of a dust and a flammable gas or vapor.

After reviewing results of studies that exist on the topic, the researchers concluded that the energy needed to ignite nanomaterials made of metals, such as aluminum, is less than 1 mJ, which is less than 1/30th the energy required to ignite sugar dust or less than 1/60th the energy required to set wheat dust aflame. Flocking is often made with a process that generates static electricity, which could set off an explosion of flocculent dust, they point out. And the addition of a flammable gas or vapor to a dust as a hybrid mixture increases the chance that the dust will explode. The researchers warn that precautions should be taken to prevent these materials from exposure to sparks, collisions or friction, which could fuel an explosion.
